Question: Should I major in mechanical or chemical engineering? I'm trying to decide my major and I have to do it within the next few days! At this point I've taken both intro to mechanical and chemical engineering classes, but I still don't know which one I like better. Sometimes I like mechanics better, sometimes I like chemistry better. However, if I chose chemical I'd be a little behind because I have to catch up on organic chemistry, whereas with mechanical I am right on track already. Since I've taken more mechanics-related courses, going into chemical engineering would be stepping out of my current "comfort zone" in terms of the subject matter (although in high school I used to think I liked chemistry better after taking one year of it, then I took so many physics-type courses that now I am more comfortable with physics).
Part of the reason I want to switch to chemical is that I think the field is a newer emerging field, with more opportunities for innovation, while I've heard some say that mechanical engineering has all been done--most of the jobs are repetitively tweaking little aspects of designs like turbine blades, etc. At the same time, there are still lots of different kinds of mechanical engineering jobs out there since it's so broad, so I'm sure it can't be all repetitive. I think the product design, robotics, aerospace, biomechanical (designing surgical tools, replacement joints), and "Disney-imagineering" aspects of it are very neat. I'm also interested in the environmental, medical, and material/substance development part of chemical engineering, not so much the process control part (which, if my understanding is correct, is controlling the flow of chemicals through pipes in the factory plant, etc.), even though I do enjoy the mathematical work associated with heat/mass transfer.
One of my dilemmas is that most of my current "support group" is in the mechanical engineering department--the professors I know, the people and students I am friends with, etc. I think it's really important to have people you can rely on when you need help, companionship, or people to work together. I'm afraid that if I go into chemical, I am going to really have a hard time because I don't have anyone to collaborate with or talk to. Although of course I know I'd eventually make friends, I think at least for this next semester it would be rather difficult and I'd be mostly on my own. I would really miss the people that I've become good friends with. Every time I think I've made up my mind to switch to chemical, then I see people from my mechanical classes and realize how much I would miss them all.
Also, I don't know how specialized chemical engineering is. Is it possible to work in a more mechanical-related industry with a degree in chemical engineering, or is it possible to work in a more chemical-related industry with a degree in mechanical engineering?
Still, it's really tempting because I feel like chemical engineering might be a subject I'd really enjoy, once I got caught up in the curricula, plus it has a lot of new opportunities and research. Sometimes I get tired of the same old forces and vectors and moments routine.
As a side note, I don't know if I'll continue to permanently work in an industry. Actually, I've always been interested in becoming either a teacher or a professor.

Answer: While double majoring is an option, it may require a lot of extra time and effort, unless there is a lot of overlap in the requirements. Personally, and I'm not saying one is better than the other, I'd go with chemical engineering. I've found that fields within chemistry have a lot more opportunities available than other science and engineering fields. For example, it is difficult for a biology major to be accepted into a physics-related field in graduate school, and, similarly, it is difficult for a physics major to be accepted into a biology-related field simply because there is not much similarity in the type of courses you take between the two subjects. Chemistry, on the other hand, is really like a bridge between the disciplines. If you look at various graduate programs, chemistry-related majors can be accepted into programs in biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering as well. Also, I've looked at many jobs across the science spectrum where chemistry majors are welcome while physics and biology majors can only apply (at least have a chance) to jobs within their specific fields. While mechanical engineering is a great field, I feel that it limits some of your future options. Keep in mind, too, that chemistry/chemical engineering still involves a lot of physics (after all, chemistry is really just applied physics), mathematics, thermodynamics, etc., plus you get the added benefit (in my opinion, anyways) of getting familiar with topics in the natural sciences (biology) as well. If you are planning to get a Ph.D. and want to teach at the university level, I also think a chemistry field will open up some options in what you can teach. Ultimately, however, go with a major that you really enjoy. Physics is awesome, no doubt about it, Chemistry and Biology just happen to float my boat a little more. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Answer: since you have not specified your inventions or ideas about it, we can only give general guidelines. The best solutions would be for you to make a prototype of your invention and test it for its for functional requirements. If this succeeds then you can consult any senior mechanical or any engineer for further testing for endurance, life, environmental conditions etc.

Answer: You're missing a few steps.
#1 Idea. (Inspiration is often too strong a word.)
#2 Market Survey. What else is there on the market that's close? Is your idea preferable? Is there entrenched competition? How much would the market be willing to pay. (Many inventors leave this step to last, rather than addressing it early, and it can lead to man years of wasted effort.)
#3 Feasibility Evaluation. Is there technology currently available to realize your invention at a cost that the market would be willing to pay? What will development of saleable prototypes cost you? Do you have the resources? The necessary skills?
The rest of it you have about right, but you skipped marketing. Marketing needs to get involved immediately after testing of your prototype, and continues thereafter.

Question: Will my career meet a ceiling because I do not have a PhD? A few years ago I was pursuing my PhD degree in Engineering. Due to a sudden health issue, I had to shorten my graduate school experience to a M.S. I currently work in Biotechnology field and there are many PhDs around me (50-70%).
I am at a juncture that I can choose my future career to two different paths. One offer is is about technology transfer between manufacturing sites. Another offer is about process development and scientific research.
There are many challenges if I want to go back to get a PhD. I may eventually obtain a MBA instead. Given this circumstances, should I worry that my career path will be stalled somewhat in process development department, because I do not have a PhD? I understand that in life, degrees are not the only thing that matters. However, I do want to know if anyone feels that ceiling and tell me is it hard to break it.

Answer: For many jobs, a PhD is not required. I think that you should do what you want to do, and then do that the best you can do it. So, I really don't want to get into the personal stuff here, but then that means that you sort of have to weigh the risks with the benefits. You already work in bioengineering, so you already have a pretty good job, and a pretty good career ahead of you. I mean, A PhD is always a welcome reasourcce and I think it will help you alot. So the bottom line is: You're celling for your career might be shortened a little bit (depending on the job in which you chose) but like, it shouldn't really slow you down, if you are willing to do a little extra work-some extra reaserch. Stuff like that.

Answer: My only concern is that when I copied and pasted this into a Word document is that it carried on to a second page and has minimal white space.
The white space is important as resumes get less than a 30 second scan through, and your work history only goes back to six years and is very short to require a second page.
Move the locations up to the same line as the company/school. Also shorten up the professiona profile and pick which bullets reflect a major accomphlishment or qualification for the position.
For example, Conducted extensive research and development & Conducted experiments and recorded data are relating to the same thing, so you could combine them into one bullet.

There has been a development over the last 10-15 years or so in the scientific peer reviewed literature that is short circuiting the scientific method.
The scientific method involves developing a hypothesis and then seeking to refute it. If all attempts to discredit the hypothesis fails, we start to accept the proposed theory as being an accurate description of how the real world works.
A useful summary of the scientific method is given on the website sciencebuddies.org.where they list six steps

• Construct a Hypothesis
• Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment
• Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion
• Communicate Your Results
Unfortunately, in recent years papers have been published in the peer reviewed literature that fail to follow these proper steps of scientific investigation. These papers are short circuiting the scientific method.
Specifically, papers that present predictions of the climate decades into the future have proliferated. Just a two recent examples (and there are many others) are

Such studies are even reported in the media before the peer reviewed process is completed; e.g. see in the article by Hannad Hoag in the May 27 2009 issue of Nature News Hot times ahead for the Wild West.
These studies are based on models, of which only a portion of which represent basic physics (e.g. the pressure gradient force, advection and the universal gravitational constant), with the remainder of the physics parameterized with tuned engineering code (e.g see).
When I served as Chief Editor of the Monthly Weather Reviews (1981-1985), The Co-Chief Editor of the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences (1996-2000), and as Editor-in-Chief of the US National Science Report to the IUGG for the American Geophysical Union (1993-1996), such papers would never have been accepted.
What the current publication process has evolved into, at the detriment of proper scientific investigation, are the publication of untested (and often untestable) hypotheses. The fourth step in the scientific method “Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment” is bypassed.
This is a main reason that the policy community is being significantly misinformed about the actual status of our understanding of the climate system and the role of humans within it

Sure we can't make stars but we don't scare people by saying hey our Sun is going to explode in 100 years if you don't stop CO2.
If climate model is so accurate why does it predict global warming when we had the coldest winter in past 10 years? Now don't try to tell me its because of climate change.
Global warming by itself will moderate the temperature due to rise in humidity not make it more extreme.
And as I say in my other answers, if I write my atomic theory which to me makes more sense than current atomic "Theory", people reject it because I'm a Physicist nor do I have PhD in anything. Yet when it comes to Global warming the lead person is Al Gore to explain how it will effect us?
Secondly I haven't seen a single book explaining any climate modal they have come up with, nor are these program available online, I don't know what formulation are being used and I don't know how they work nor have they been made public.
If I tell you electron has - charge, I have to prove it to you, if I say stars formed in dense cloud of gas and dust I have to show it to you or its just called "Theory" its doesn't call for "drastic" actions based on "NOTHING".
First of all Climate Change or global warming alarmist don't call their "Unknown Stuff" as theory, they stay it as its something proven in past when no reasoning or formulation has been made public or explained to public. Secondly they are using this "Unknown unformulated unexplained theory" to make governments spend trillions of dollars and they are telling my son something which can't be proven.
When it comes to "Theory of Evolution" its still called theory even though its quite clear if you read about it that its something very logical, very much possible, yes no one has seen it happen but we do see it on micro scale. Yet people oppose it to be taught in schools. While Global warming is not proven, its link with CO2 is not proven, all models predict complete different result and still my child is being fed with this wrong information.

The Development of the AIDS virus was funded in 1969 through funds obtained by the United States Defense Department via House Bill 15090. The Bill, which called for the US Defense Department to receive $10 million dollars to research, test and develop the virus, was reviewed in Hearings before the Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations, House of Representatives during the ninety-first Congress in review of the Defense Appropriations for 1970. 8 Dr. Strecker further contends that AIDS couldn't have engineered itself, and reiterates that it was produced in a laboratory by virologists. 13 As a result, "they suggested that a way to do this would be to put their new killer virus (AIDS) into a vaccination program, sit back and observe the results.
14 The WHO used smallpox vaccine as their vicious vehicle to spread the AIDS virus and the geographic areas chosen were Uganda and other African countries, Haiti, Brazil and Japan. The present "AIDS epidemic coincides with these geographical areas.
15 As an addendum, "there is also substantial evidence" to show that a confidential source in the WHO has revealed that there is "a strong correlation between the proportion of people in different central African countries who consented to the smallpox vaccine program and the proportion of those now infected with AIDS.
16 The stark reality is that "the AIDS virus must be a man-made, bio-engineered virus.
17 Hence, it's no great surprise that the WHO, in true Euro-supremacist modus operandi, "started to inject AIDS-laced smallpox vaccine (Vaccina) into over 100 million Africans (as part of its global non-European population reduction program) in 1977.

If it takes 14 months to double the number of cases, then there would have been 13 doublings, 1 then 2, then 4, then 8, etc. In 15 years, from a single source of infection there would be about 8,000 cases in Africa, not 75 million AIDS infected people. We are approaching World War II mortality statistics here without a shot being fired.
19 The fact of the matter is that under the current European global policy of annihilating people of color, "AIDS is expected to kill more people and orphan more children than all the wars of the 20th century combined.
20 The Global Impact of AIDS
The spread of the AIDS virus is omnipresent among African peoples and people of color. AIDS is without any doubt, the largest epidemic in human history. The global magnitude of the impact of AIDS is such that as of June 2001, "more than 70 percent of the people with the virus that causes AIDS are in sub-Saharan Africa, the poorest region in the world.

The Tuskegee Experiment
A relevant comparison analysis is the Tuskegee Experiment that was conducted by the U.S. government on innocent and unsuspecting African-American males from 1932-1972. In 1932, the United States Public Health Services solicited and recruited about 400 African-American males as guinea pigs in "one of the most notorious medical experiments ever" on the study of the effects of syphilis in Macon County, Alabama.
29 These subjects never gave informed consent for their participation in the study. "The Black men were never told they had syphilis nor were they told their disease could endanger their families.
30 In the fall of 1932, handbills were posted and circulated at several church gatherings in the poor county, where even the one black doctor served only those who could afford to pay. In sum, the U.S. government-sponsored Tuskegee Experiment is germ-biological warfare committed on its own citizens for 40 years. It must be noted, however, that in 1974, a US Civil Rights attorney won a $10m settlement from the government for the Tuskegee victims and their heirs, and another $2.1m payment was received in 1976. On May 16, 1997, then-President Bill Clinton issued an official public apology on behalf of the U.S. government to the victims of the Tuskegee experiment.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that after primates have roamed the Earth for more than 5 million years & modern humans for over 500 thousand years without incidence, it is a coincidence that they have contracted this indestructible virus in the 20th Century when & where the technology existed to enable the creation of such viruses.

Question: Where is the best place for a scientist to begin exploring the cancer research literature? Complex modern problems like understanding the development of cancer invariably require a multidisciplinary approach. Biologists and physicians will be instrumental to this process, but other sciences have already and will continue to play a role in the development of this field.

Answer: Coming from cancer research institute I can attest this is a very hard question to answer. There have been years and years of research into this topic and it gets very overwhelming when you start to read up on it.

Question: Migrating to Australia? My wife and I are considering the possibility of migrating to Australia from the US. She has a MBA in Business Management and has worked with and for a major computer manufacture for 10+years. I worked in general aviation for 10 years in research and development and the most recent 10 years have been in supply chain management handling imports from overseas and inventory control for the same computer manufacture as my wife. I am also an audio engineer and working musician. We are just starting the process and it’s a bit overwhelming. Answer: The problem is that no one really knows why accidents happen. What, really, is an "accident?" I always thought it referred to the changes in this codification that you mention that has allowed life to evolve to the level it enjoys today. I imagine this accidental evolution went through Preparations A-G before getting it right with Preparation H. Certain molecules and systems behave in characteristic ways. The chaos comes during the complex process of combining them into systems and organisms, so perhaps this paradigm is much like someone failing to understand how human-human interactions can produce so much chaos and so much change...and so many "accidents." Sure, accidents happen, but if that is ALL that happened, there would be no life, because systems couldn't organize. At least this is how I understand it, in a nutshell, between tasks, a bit on the run. Thanks for the question, and cheers!

It seems you are pointing out one of the great barriers in scientific knowledge, the absolute beginning of things and also the absolute limit of how the universe works at the extreme micro level. Of course it is natural there are frontiers that do not allow themselves to be uncovered so easily. I am not sure what you are trying to say about "leaps of faith." It sounds like a sort of "God of the Gaps" thesis, but it also sounds like the words of a scientist who has spent much time at the edge and needs an explanation. Sometimes it just takes a long time and many shifts in mode of thought.

War in Iraq update
This war has been going on for a few years now. Many wonder, “When will it end?” For some new updates I went to Http://www.cnn.com and clicked on the war in Iraq.
Here is a story broadcasted on CNN:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The system for delivering badly needed gear to Marines in Iraq has failed to meet many urgent requests for equipment from troops in the field, according to an internal document obtained by The Associated Press.
Of more than 100 requests from deployed Marine units between February 2006 and February 2007, less than 10 percent have been fulfilled, the document says. It blamed the bureaucracy and a "risk-averse" approach by acquisition officials.
Among the items held up were a mine-resistant vehicle and a hand-held laser system.
"Process worship cripples operating forces," according to the document. "Civilian middle management lacks technical and operational currency."
The 32-page document -- labeled "For Official Use Only" -- was prepared by the staff of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force after they returned from Iraq in February.
The document was to be presented in March to senior officials in the Pentagon's defense research and engineering office. The presentation was canceled by Marine Corps leaders because its contents were deemed too contentious, according to a defense official familiar with the document. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it publicly.
The document's claims run counter to the public description of a process intended to cut through the layers of red tape that frequently slow the military's procurement process.
The Marine Corps had no immediate comment on the document.
In a briefing Wednesday, Marine Corps officials hailed their "Urgent Universal Need Statement" system as a way to give Marines in combat a greater say in weapons-buying decisions.
"What we all liked about [the urgent requests] is they came from the operators out on the ground and there was always a perceived better way of doing things," said Maj. Gen. Dennis Hejlik, who was a commander in Iraq from June 2004 to February 2005.
The document lists 24 examples of equipment urgently needed by Marines in Iraq's Anbar province. One, the mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle, has received attention as a promising way to protect troops from roadside blasts, the leading killer of U.S. forces in Iraq.
After receiving a February 2005 urgent request approved by Hejlik for nearly 1,200 of the vehicles, the Marine Corps instead purchased improved versions of the ubiquitous Humvee.
The industrial capacity did not exist to quickly build the new mine-resistant vehicles and the more heavily armored Humvees were viewed as a suitable solution, Marine Corps officials said.
That proved not to be the case, as insurgent elements in Iraq developed more powerful bombs that could penetrate the Humvees. The mine-resistant vehicles are now a top priority for all the military branches, which plan to buy 7,774 of the carriers at a cost of $8.4 billion.
Brig. Gen. Robert Milstead, chief of Marine Corps public affairs, said cost was not a factor in choosing the Humvee.
"This was not a budgetary decision," Milstead said Wednesday. "You can take that to the bank."
'Delays cause ... deaths and injuries'
The internal document, however, states that the cost of building new vehicles was a primary reason the request was denied by the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Virginia.
Needs of the deployed troops are "competed against funded programs," the document states.
"Resistance costs time," it adds. "Unnecessary delays cause U.S. friendly and innocent Iraqi deaths and injuries."
A second example cited is the compact high power laser dazzler, an inexpensive, nonlethal tool for steering unwelcome vehicles away from U.S. checkpoints in Iraq. The dazzler emits a powerful stream of green light that stops or redirects oncoming traffic by temporarily impairing the driver's vision.
Safety procedures block laser purchase
In June 2005, Marines stationed in western Iraq filed an urgent request for several hundred of the dazzlers, which are built by LE Systems, a small company in Hartford, Connecticut. The request was repeated nearly a year later.
"Timely purchase and employment of all systems bureaucratically stymied," the document states.
Separate documents indicate the deployed Marines became so frustrated at the delays they bypassed normal acquisition procedures and used money from their own budget to buy 28 of the dazzlers directly from LE Systems.
But because the lasers had not passed a safety review process, stateside authorities barred the Marines from using them.
In January, nearly 18 months after the first request, the Marines received a less powerful laser built by a different company.
Titus Casazza, president of LE Systems, criticized the Marine Corps' acquisition process.
'Bureaucrats and lab rats'
"The bureaucrats and lab rats sitting behind a desk stateside are making decisions on what will be given to our soldiers even if contrary to the specific requests of these soldiers and their commanding generals," he said.
There are successful examples listed in the briefing document. A December request for an airborne surveillance system -- Angel Fire -- is expected to be filled this summer. The system provides constant overhead surveillance of large urban areas, such as Ramadi or Falluja, and is able to track the movement of people and vehicles.
Len Blasiol, a civilian official with the Combat Development Command, said the speed with which requests can be met is largely dependent on how much research and development work needs to be done.
"The first question is, 'Is this something we can go out right now today and buy? Is it sitting on a shelf somewhere waiting for us to buy?' And if it is, then we figure out how to buy it," Blasiol said.
As you can see… there is much going on in the war. When will this stop? I don’t know for sure, one thing I do know is that we are just entering our fifth year of combat.

Question: Why are we pushing gas-electric hybrids when diesel vehicles are already better for the environment? Companies such as BMW and VW produce diesel vehicles receive 36mpg (with 425ft pounds of torque) and 55mpg (with $250 worth of mods) respectively. While diesel engines are still a little more pricey, they last longer, producing less waste. We've had engines that last over 500,000 miles for a few decades and the public is still floored that Toyota often gets over 300,000 miles on a single engine. Also, diesel is not refined as thoroughly as gasoline, making the process to produce (and also to burn) easier on the environment.. Luxury automakers such as Lexus have been piggybacking electric motors on top of engines (instead of vice verse) and engineers from Ferrari are starting to follow suit. In my opinion, extracting 450+ horses out of 30mpg (15:1 power to mileage efficiency) sounds like a larger achievement than a whopping 130 horses from 55 mpg (2.4:1 efficiency) in many hybrids. Why not cut the power by 65% and back it up with some low-end torque from a motor? Performance, value and mileage rolled into one vehicle.. So why is it that we are investing most of our research and development into a weak vehicle who's lithium ion battery is heavy, unsafe in crashes and the resources to produce this quintessential building block is running out quickly?
Answer: Congradulations on a new account for this one question. You have an interesting "opinion" of "power to mileage "efficiency." Consider that if your 450+ HP vehicle were only getting about 9 mpg, like some Hummers, your "power to mileage efficiency" would jump again to 50 to 1. So all else being equal, the lower the fuel mileage the more "efficient" the vehicle is by your measure?? I am not sure what positive achievement might be reached with these numbers. It is not what most would consider to be "efficiency" or high "mileage." Most would consider a powerful vehicle at a low cost a "value." At a high fuel and maintenance cost the "value" and "achievement." decreases.
It is true that diesels have a lot going for them. Some of the European Diesels are getting very high mileage. Due to their higher compression ratios, Diesels have a theoretical efficiency around 40% compared to around 30% for a gasoline engine. Also due to higher compression ratios the engines are built heavier, are somewhat simpler and tend to last longer and the engine has a lot of low end torque.
But as good as they are they cannot compare with an electric motor that has full starting torque at 0 RPM, can be over 90% efficient, have only one moving part, last virtually forever with no maintenance, and are cheap to build. But technology and patent law has not yet given us electrical energy storage to match the chemical energy storage in petrochemicals. Attaching a generator is one solution. It could be powered by any number of fuels. This might give us a vehicle 5 times more efficient than a fueled vehicle alone. It would be known as a series hybrid.1
But this is not exactly what happened. Instead the rights to a great battery system (2) were purchased by Chevron.3 They have consistently sued to keep those batteries so small that that there was not enough power for a fully electric vehicle. They did permit the parallel hybrid design which is only roughly twice as efficient as a fueled vehicle alone.1
Eventually energy storage issues will be resolved and then the superior electric drivetrain will be used to full advantage.
Question: What ever happened to environmental modification { EnMod } ? After 3 weeks of research into Environmental modification or EnMod I found many things suprising and thought I would share and see what is you take on this - Environmental modification or EnMod was researched in the beginning of the 1970s and portions of the U.S. government and/or military viewed weather and climate modification research as having transitioned from the "basic research" stage to the "operational" stage. Experiments were occurring - or had occurred - in 22 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Iran, Israel, Kenya, Italy, France, South Africa, Congo and the U.S.S.R. Airborne seeding programs were undertaken to combat drought in the Philippines, Okinawa, Africa and Texas. Fog clearing had become a standard operation at airports, as had hailstorm abatement, which had been proven successful in several parts of the world. Forest fire control had been carried out in Alaska and watershed seeding was widely practiced, while lake storm snow redistribution was under extensive investigation. By 1973 there were over 700 degreed scientists and engineers in the U.S. whose major occupation was environmental modification (EnMod).
And then it all changed. In 1978 The United States became a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques (EnMod Convention or ENMOD for short). The EnMod Convention prohibits the use of techniques that would have widespread, long-lasting or severe effects through deliberate manipulation of natural processes and cause such phenomena as earthquakes, tidal waves and changes in climate and weather patterns.
Independent journalist Keith Harmon Snow wrote a massive report entitled: "Out of the Blue: Black Programs, Space Drones & The Unveiling of U.S. Military Offensives in Weather as a Weapon." In it he tells us: "In 1976, U.S. government officials outlined 50 experimental projects and 20 actual pilot programs costing upwards of $100 million over the next eight years. It was an explosive subject, up [through] the 1970s but, after 1977, EnMod interest seemed to disappear almost overnight. In other words, after decades of intense research and development, after billions of dollars of investment, after major institutions and governmental bodies were created and charged with oversight of EnMod and its many peripheral issues, and after the entire reorganization of the U.S. Government to channel and guide and map out the future of this new and promising military and civilian 'technology' - said to be more important than the atom bomb - everything stopped.
Or did it?
It was as if a huge curtain fell over the subject as all research, all institutional interests, huge salaries and thousands of jobs - vanished. And the mass media stopped reporting anything and everything as if struck by plague. That - sudden and total silence - is perhaps the most telling and suspicious indication of the secrecy and denial that the EnMod arena was shackled with. Today it is almost as if it never happened."
Could it be that the US government said, "Oh gee, we can't do that any more" and just gave up on military EnMod - or did the whole program go "black"?
Answer: A more likely scenario:
The US pours 100s of millions of dollars into whacky pie-in-the-sky weather control programs that turn out to do basically nothing.
Rather than admit that, they sign the treaty and 'scrap' the programs.
The ABM treaty was similar. The technology just wasn't there to make ABMs work, but money was spent on them none the less, rather than just say "oops, we wasted a lot of money" we made 'giving up' ABMs a big deal.
Now, the technology is here, and we're making ABMs.
Only difference is, 'weather control machines' are still science fiction.

Human cloning could produce many benefits. Human therapeutic cloning could provide genetically identical cells for regenerative medicine, and tissues and organs for transplantation. Such cells, tissues, and organs would neither trigger an immune response nor require the use of immunosuppressive drugs. Both basic research and therapeutic development for serious diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, as well as improvements in burn treatment and reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, are areas that might benefit from such new technology.
Human reproductive cloning also would produce benefits. Antinori and Zavos hope to create a fertility treatment that allows parents who are both infertile to have children with at least some of their DNA in their offspring.

Answer: There are a few reasons as to why cloning is illegal
1. On the end of DNA strands, there are telomeres. the telomeres are like caps on the ed of the dna strands. they hold the DNA together so itdoesn't unravel. however. when cloning the cloned animlal can have either longer telomeres or shorter telomeres than the original. this means that they will live either longer or shorter than the original. it would be nice if the telomeres were longer on a human clone, but the more common in cloning is shorter telomeres. this makes it safe to assume that if a human was cloned, that its life expectancy would drop by years. (but i say big woop. its either today or tomarrow)
2.People belive that if people cloned other people, that the rich ass people would create 'designer' babies. (but i say that there could be laws and regulations made to prevent this)
3. it could create riots due to the act that about 52% of the united states is against cloning. (but i say it would eventually die down)
4. it is belived that cloned human children would recieve persecution from others. (which isn't really true cuz when they made the tast tube babies people were excited and loved the test tube babies so much that thye spoiled them rotten)
5. if a husband and wife were to decide to get a cloned child, whos child is it really, if its only cloned from one parent. problems would arrise if the couple got divorced.
i feel that besides # 5 there arn't really ay good reasons. the only thing that im against with cloning is the theraputic cloning because you have to kill the fetus in order to extract the stem cells. but there are alternatives to that. for example. theraputic cloning is being done on monkeys, and any organs made that way can be transplanted into humans.
