Question: What does a Materials Engineer do in a nuclear power plant? How can a Materials Engineer help in improving nuclear power plants?
Answer: they deal with issues of corrosion, cracking, nuclear bombardment damage, failure analysis. They don't "improve" nuclear plants as the design is frozen before it is built. Now, materials engineers DO work at the manufacturers of these plants to help select the best material for each part of the plant, and in that way they do improve them, but the improvements generally appear in the next iteration of the design. The improvements can sometimes be retrofitted in existing plants during repairs and upgrades, but the design responsibility is not at the plant level.
Question: What is the average salary nowdays for an experienced electrical power engineer?
Answer: It depends a lot on where you live in the country. The high cost of living areas must pay more annual salary, or they can't be competitive and attract good engineers.
So you can have a wide swing in the various salaries across the country. And then you also get into how experienced, as that affect compensation as well. An engineer with 10 years experience may be experienced and is well compensated, but someone with 30 years may make much more.
I would say depending on the region that you live, it may average from $70K to $120K per year. Larger utilities in NY or California usually pay more.
Question: How to become a power engineer contractor, Your own contracting company. (CBM?)? Instead of being an employee how would you create your own buiness in being a power engineer contractor, I know there is a website and i think there is a contracting firm to get you started into being your own contracting company in Canada Alberta. I think there is a company called CBM or something close but I cant seem to find the website or how i would get myself started.
Answer: It is very tough to be a solo consulting engineer. Almost impossible, unless you have an established pipe line.
What is your market? Who would you be servicing? Be very specific. You do not have a business, unless you have a customer, first.
Question: How can I engineer a system to power an air pump without home electricity available? I need to run an air pump where there is no electricity from an outlet available... what can i use to power a simple fish tank air pump for about 2 months? a car battery? solar power? ect... and how do i set these systems up?
Answer: If the pump runs on 12V, a car battery would work. It might need to be recharged every week or two. For $200 you might be able to buy a 12V system, or maybe even a 120V system. Try northern tool.
Question: The service engineer at chevy put 2T oil in my optra and now the car is loosing power how advisable is it ? I have a chevrolet optra 1.6 and after the servicing i had some missing problems for which the service engineer put the 2t pre mixed oil in the fuel tank and thereafter i started getting the knocking problem and today the car almost lost power and has now gone to the service station for a major checkup can some tell me in details the ill effects of having 2T oil in petrol for such cars ?
Answer: well sounds to me like he pulled a vacuum line off or a plug wire off but i do not think it is the t2 that is giving you the prob. unless it loosened some dirt in the tank and clogged the fuel line. or filter but i think it not that bad.
Question: Does the engineer who makes the power possible need you more than you need him? If he decides to walk away with his peers and let you fend for yourself, then where are you?
Answer: both need each other

Question: I am an electrical engineer with power electronics major i want to study a master of computer is this possibl?
Answer: So you mean Computer Science or Computer Engineering?
I am an electrical engineer and when I was in college (about 10 years ago) the difference between an electrical engineering degree and a computer engineering degree came down to just 5 or 6 classes. It would have taken me just an extra 6 months to get a double major by picking up the few classes that the computer engineers took than I did not take. (In fact, the year I STARTED college was the first time that the two degrees were officially separated.)
For the first person that answered.... electrical engineers are usually required to take programming courses and have the option of taking computer hardware classes.

Question: Which is a better career : Electrical power engineering or computer networks ? I'm an electrical power engineer , but I changed my career to computer networks ( Helpdesk agent CCNA certified ) , but really confused wether to continue with the computer networks field or return to electrical power engineerig
PS : I have 1 yr experience in the electrical power field and has been working in the computer networks for 7 months
But I believe that anybody who can get some network courses can be a network admin . But not for engineering
Anybody agree ? or disagree ?
Which is more money making on the long run ?
Answer: I owned an Electrical Contracting / IT business so I'm fairly confident advising you to stay in the IT field. If you stay in electrical engineering, the most money you'll probably make (in a job) is as a project manager.
This will very likely require you to pass the Professional Engineering test (not easy) and at least 10 years in the field, at a high level (design & management). Design engineers are notoriously underpaid and underappreciated, and the market is saturated with electrical engineers.
The IT field is constantly evolving, growing and it’s much easier to move up into a senior management position in considerably less time. Plus, if you ever wanted to go into your own business, the IT field has much less overhead, more profit and consequently much easier to get into. So, in my opinion, it’s an easy choice, stay with IT.
Question: hi currently im working as a commissioning engineer (electrical) in a power plant.? hi currently im working as a commissioning engineer (electrical) in a power plant. Can i enter design field of the power plant with commissioning experiance? if i cant please tell me the suitable way to enter design field.
Answer: In order to be an effective commissioning engineer one needs to know the working details of all of the equipment involved. That is a very good background for doing design work. At least that has been my experience. You also see the mistakes made in design as well as ways to improve the design.
Question: I am a Engineer in Hydro power construction. What is the scope in Europe for me with exp. of 3 years.? I am an Engineer working for 3 years in Hydro power station and project construction. I want to what is the future scope I can look in future in Europe and USA and ASIA. I want to swicth.
Answer: Your question is too comprehensive. Your scope depends on the needs of your employer. You need to first determine who you want to work for to then determine a scope
Question: can you advice me project ideas based on thermal power plant for my final year engineering project? i am a final year Btech power engineering student and i need to make a project so can you advice me project ideas based on power plant engineering and thermal power plant.
please i need them urgently.
Answer: You could design an integrated fuel ethanol distillery power plant.
Since the waste heat from a steam plant is plenty hot enough to boil ethanol/water, it should be relatively straightforward, and would have far better economics than an ethanol plant that has to buy fuel for distillation.
Question: is it possible for a mechanical engineer to work at nuclear power plants or stations ?
Answer: yes
you would be involved with design/maintenance of the machinery
nuclear engineers would be the ones involved with the actual reactor itself
Question: is a 4th class power engineer a noble and hard job?do peolp look at them as smart people?
i mean would you admire a job like that or is it a bull crap job?
Answer: 4th class is entry level, the 2nd class guys at the heavy oil plant i work at in northern Alberta aren't saying but they make at least 80 to 100 thousand a year, yeah it's hard, and yeah they're smart
Question: where are first class power engineer exams?
Answer: Your question wasn't clear. You will have to provide a little more information for us to help you. Like where are you from ? Which sector of power engineering do you study ?

Question: How Would you grade my paper on nuclear power? Nuclear energy, also called atomic energy, is the powerful energy released by changes in the nucleus (core) of atoms. The heat and light of the sun result from nuclear energy. Scientists and engineers have found many uses for this energy, including the production of electric power, the explosion of nuclear weapons, and the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.
Scientists knew nothing about nuclear energy until the early 1900's, though they knew that all matter consists of atoms. Through further study, scientists learned that a nucleus makes up most of the mass (quantity of matter) of every atom and that this nucleus is held together by an extremely strong force. A huge amount of energy is concentrated in the nucleus because of this force. The next step was to make nuclei let go of much of that energy.
Scientists first released nuclear energy on a large scale at the University of Chicago in 1942, three years after World War II began. This achievement led to the development of the atomic bomb. The first atomic bomb was exploded in the desert near Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. In August, United States planes dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The bombs largely destroyed both cities and helped end World War II.
Since 1945, scientists have developed peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The energy released by nuclei creates large amounts of heat. This heat can be used to make steam, and the steam can be used to drive machines that generate electric power. Engineers have built devices called nuclear reactors to produce and control nuclear energy.
A nuclear reactor operates somewhat like a furnace. However, instead of using such fossil fuels as coal or oil, almost all reactors use uranium. And instead of burning in the reactor, the uranium fissions—that is, its nuclei split into two or more fragments. As a nucleus splits, it releases energy that is converted largely into heat. The fission of 1 pound of uranium releases more energy than the burning of 3 million pounds (1,500 tons) of coal. Stated in metric terms, the fission of 1 kilogram of uranium releases more energy than the burning of 3 million kilograms (3,000 metric tons) of coal.
One important peaceful use of nuclear energy is the production of electric power. Nuclear energy also powers some submarines, surface ships, and spacecraft. Nuclear reactions also produce particles and rays called nuclear radiation that have uses in medicine, industry, and science. However, nuclear radiation can be extremely dangerous. Exposure to too much radiation can result in a condition called radiation sickness
Almost all the world's electric energy is produced by hydroelectric and thermal power plants. Hydroelectric plants use the force of rushing water from a dam or waterfall to generate electric power. Thermal plants use the force of steam from boiling water. The great majority of thermal plants burn fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—to produce heat to boil water. The remaining thermal plants fission uranium.
Few countries have enough water power to generate large amounts of hydroelectric power, and many regions have already fully exploited their hydroelectric capacity. Most countries depend mainly on fossil fuels. But fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource, and burning them produces gases that can damage the environment. Therefore, many experts predict that nuclear power will become increasingly important
Nuclear power reactors produce electric power in about 30 countries. There are about 440 reactors worldwide. These reactors produce about 16 percent of the world's electric power. The United States is the world's largest producer of nuclear energy. In addition to these reactors, there are more than 3,000 nuclear facilities worldwide that are used for applications in research, medicine, industry, and agriculture.
Nuclear power plants have two main advantages over fossil-fuel plants. (1) Once built, a nuclear plant can be less expensive to operate than a fossil-fuel plant, mainly because a nuclear plant uses a much smaller volume of fuel. (2) Uranium, unlike fossil fuels, releases no chemical or solid pollutants into the air during use.
However, nuclear power plants have three major disadvantages. These disadvantages have slowed the development of nuclear energy in some countries. (1) Nuclear plants cost more to build than fossil-fuel plants. (2) Because of the need to assure that hazardous amounts of radioactive materials are not released, nuclear plants must meet certain government regulations that fossil-fuel plants do not have to meet. For example, a nuclear plant must satisfy the government that it can quickly and automatically deal with any kind of emergency. (3) Used nuclear fuel produces dangerous radiation long after it has been removed from the reactor. As a result, safe disposal of nuclear waste presents a challenge
Many experts believe that the benefits of nuclear energy outweigh any problems

Answer: Yes. The field of power engineering is rapidly changing with smart grid technology. As a power engineer, it would benefit you to have exposure in a wide range of subjects. Who know what technology the future holds for our aging power system. What we do know is that it will change and power engineers must be ready.
Question: Electric Power Engineer. Help!? kW Consumption? We are operating a Central Utility Building, composed of chillers, pumps, and cooling tower.
However during Emergency Grid (using Generators), Upon operation of the equipments, the kW consumption on the LVSG seems lower compared to the equipment motor ratings. During one simulation, the kW consumption of the equipments is 677 kW, whereas the chiller is indicating that it is operating at 90% part load (on chiller monitor screen), equivalent to total of 905 kW (all equipments including pumps and cooling towers running at 90% part load). In my tabulation of cumulative consumption, the chiller equivalent operating condition to the 677 kW is at 50% part load; pumps and cooling tower at 90%.
Why is that? Can anyone explain this phenomenon?
Presumably the chiller start up current is not reached, could it be the reason on lower kW consumption on LVSG compared to part load consumption on Chiller Monitor Screen?
What are other reason why motor rating, though the screen indicates it is operating at 90%, is operating at lower condition on the LSG?
HELP!!
Ok to simplify :
During Emergency Grid
- Low voltage switch gear monitored kW all equip. consumption = 677 kW
- Total consumption on Chiller and equipments as per rated motor power (chiller operating condition @90% ) by calculation = 905 kW
- Equivalent running condition to be near 677 kW as per LVSG is chiller running @ 50%, by calculation per motor rating.
- pumps and cooling tower running at constant ratings throughout, chiller does not. Chiller is 410 kW and can run on part load.
- Voltage is 465V and not dipping as per report
Of the 905 kW calculated total equipment motor load, 50% is consumed by pump, 10% is cooling tower, 40% is chiller.
pump = ~452 kW,
cooling tower = ~90.5 kW,
chiller = ~ 369 kW, (or 90% part load of 410 kW chiller motor rating which is showing on the chiller screen)
However
The actual kW consumption according to the LVSG is 677 kW, assume pumps and cooling tower operate at constant kW, at chiller 50% partload = 205 kW (or 50% of chiller 410 kW rating). Total kW is 748 kW, which is closest to 677 kW.
Can anyone help me understand this discrepancy
Answer: first, i'm not a power engineer, but i have a couple comments.
1. your question is not as clear as it might be.
2. you might check the voltages. if the emergency voltage is lower, that would change the motor rotation, and the back EMF, which might raise watts. The chillers shouldn't know where the juice is coming from, so if there is a difference, then there must be a difference in the power delivered.
3. Perhaps there's some equipment that is connected differently to the utility power, and the emergency generators.
If it were me, i'd take base voltage and wattage ratings all over, then next time i was on generators, take the readings again. i suspect that would be a good starting point.

Question: Iam 64 mech engineer having working exper of more than 30 years in power plant design and fabrication unit.? Now i want to study SAP. Can i get a good job after study of SAP?
Answer: In very broad sense, there are two different tracks in getting into SAP - functional and technical.
Technical track lays more heavily on design, modify and implement the system. Generally require programming skills. Functional track is more about understanding how users would utilize the system, then communicate to techies who would make the system do what users want.
To be really honest, unless you have prior IT experience and knowledge technical track could be challenging to complete and difficult to convince potential employers to give you a chance.
If you really want to pursuit SAP, my suggestion is that you pursuit functional track in SAP modules that are most likely be used in the industry sector that you are familiar with.
Best wishes.
