Question: What is piping engineering? I was offered a position for piping engineer training at a large firm. I am currently a constructional plumbing, installing copper and pvc pipes. What exactly is piping engineering and would this be a smooth transition for me? Also, salary is a factor. What money is there in piping engineering?
Answer: Piping, or plumbing engineering, in a consulting engineering company involves designing the layouts for the domestic water system and the sanitary sewer system almost always, and can also include storm water drains, rain water conductors and/or fire protection piping.
If you are using those kind of drawings while you're installing, then you already have a good idea of what has to be there. The rest will be learning things like codes, pipe sizing, boiler sizing, ....
Someone who is a Certified Plumbing Engineer can make almost as much as a P.E. in the right job market.

Question: What is difference between Piping Layout, Plot Plan, P&ID and Piping Isometrics? Piping engineers please respond to my question
Answer: (i) Piping Layout is dimensional drawing showing plan of pipelines laying view between starting and end points. This incorporates size of pipe (inches),thickness in inch or schedule or std.,XS-XXS., fitting detail bend, elbow, tees, reducers, valves),elevation of piping points and all details to lay pipe between two points in consideration.
(ii) Plot plan is showing drawing of land detail with ajcent reference points, where project is to take or taken place. This is dimensional drwing
(iii) P.&ID. means Process & Instrumentation diagram , it is showing piping with instrumentation control system.Generally not drawn to scale.
(iV) Piping isometric means isometric view of pipe line between two points in consideration.Drawn to the scale.Gives correct detail of Bill of Matrial needed for execution of the piping job.
Question: piping engineering course in india or abroad? hiiii
i am a mechanical engineer, i have completed my B.Tech from INDIA. Now i want to do something in piping engineering. can somebody plzzz tell me from where can i get diploma or post graduation in piping engineering.
thanks
Answer: OMG, I just only found out that Mechanical Engineering in India do not have this piping engineering subjects in the curriculum. Go to the Philippines and you will find out that the piping works are already incorporated in a 5 year BS in Mechanical Engineering and also in 5 year BS Civil Engineering degrees. That's why all Filipino Mechanical and Civil Engineers are already well versed in piping works upon graduating and passing their professional licensure examintions in order to practice engineering.

Question: Where can i find information about salaries for piping engineers in refineries or petrochemical areas? I'm looking for salary costs for Western Europe, either as a general benchmark, or if available per country. Many thanks
Answer: closely guarded secrets my friend - everything is negotiable - there is no list.
Question: what is the difference between tube and pipe in piping engineering?
Answer: Pipes:
Since the purpose with a pipe is the transport of fluids like water, oil and many other products, the most important pipe property is the capacity, or in reality, the inside diameter of the pipe. The nominal diameter of a pipe is therefore related to the inside diameter.
If we take a look at ASME/ANSI B 36.10 Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe, the inside diameter of a 2'' pipe schedule 40 is 2.067". The inside diameter of a schedule 80 pipe is 1.939". Both inside diameters are close to 2". The outside diameters for both schedules are 2.375".
Since the outside diameter of a single nominal pipe size is kept constant, the inside diameter of a pipe will depend on the "schedule", or the thickness, of the pipe. The schedule and the actual thickness of a pipe will vary with size of pipe.
It is common to identify pipes in inches by using NPS or "Nominal Pipe Size". The metric equivalent is called DN or "diametre nominel". The metric designations conform to International Standards Organization (ISO) usage and apply to all plumbing, natural gas, heating oil, and miscellaneous piping used in buildings. The use of NPS does not conform to American Standard pipe designations where the term NPS means "National Pipe Thread Straight".
Nominal Bore (NB) may be specified under British standards classifications along with schedule (wall thickness).
The tolerances are looser to pipes compared with tubes and they are often less expensive to produce.
Tubes:
The nominal dimensions of tubes are based on the outside diameter. If we look at Copper Tubes - ASTM B88 the outside diameter of a 2" pipe is 2.125", relatively close to 2".
The inside diameter of a tube will depend on the thickness of the tube. The thickness is often specified as a gauge. If we look at Copper Tubes - ASTM B88 the wall thickness of 0.083"of a 2" pipe is gauge 14.
The tolerances are higher with tubes compared to pipes. Tubes are often more expensive to produce than pipes.
The distinction between tube and pipe, based on wall thickness limit and/or wall to diameter ratio), is a little different from industry to industry. Tubing is considered as having a wall thickness of up to 1/4-in. or less and a diameter of 6-in or less, while pipe has a wall thickness above 1/4-in. and a diameter greater than 6-in. Having said this, the author has done development work for a stainless steel structural tubing producer at wall thicknesses up to 0.315-in., hence the rather blurred nature of the definition.

Question: Which are the universities in USA & UK providing MS in Piping Design/Engineering ? I am a chemical engineer...was thinking of doin MS in Piping Design/Engineering from US/UK (in UK this course is known as pipeline engineering)...I searched a lot over net but couldn't get relevant info...I would like to request peers/friends accessing this community to chip in and help me out by posting names of univs in USA & UK providing a masters level course in this area..
Thanks!
Answer: From my academic knowledge, "pipeline engineering" isn't really a headline major in the engineering field here in the U.S. I'm not knowledgeable about the situation in the U.K, but in the U.S., here are some reputable and distinguished engineering schools:
Georgia Tech University (Atlanta, GA)
Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN)
Northwestern University (Chicago, IL)
Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN)
Yale University (New Haven, CT)
Boston University (Boston, MA)
I think you'll find the niche (pipeline design, engineering) as you proceed further into the study of engineering itself. Good luck!

Question: is piping engineering good field for future , give me an advise?
Answer: Certainly technology is booming these days, but piping will never lose a place in this world. Especially the field of piping engineering. As far as engineering goes, it is one of the highest ranking/paying jobs in construction right up there with high-rise architects. I would say that you would be playing a pretty important role in what you're looking into. It's kind of a double threat since you and a team design specific piping plans and you also contribute to building it (perhaps). There are also numerous advances in piping construction that can and are being done such as the liquid content and the amount of pressure that a certain pipe can contain. All of that is being improved every day. All and all, I would say it's a great field to go into because no matter how far technology comes along, piping has nothing to be replaced with. Good luck with finding that type of job by the way.
Question: what is the importance of piping system in civil engineering? name the main 3 usage of piping system in civil e?
Answer: storm/rainwater system, sanitary system, water system
Question: I needthe drawing and the theory about the execution of the petrochemical piping.? i am applying for a job in petrochemical industry. The job requires a mechanical engineer for eecution of the piping projects. So i need few basic drawing along with the theory that can help me. Looking forward for your co-operation.
Answer: When it comes to the drawings for process pipes there are three kinds that are often used. The Process Flow Diagram (PFD) which shows the arrangement of the equipment and materials flowing thru the lines. The Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) shows the arangement of all equipment and instrumentation. The P&ID also shows all of the specs. The PFD and the P&ID do not show how the equipment looks in 3D space you will need to use a isometric drawing to accomplish that. When it comes to symbles and standards the best place to look is the place you plan on working.
Question: what type of questions will be asked in eil for experienced piping stress engineers?
Answer: you mean engineers india ?
Question: What type of engineer would a landscaper fall under? A landscaper does a lot of work such as planting plants, fixing pipe lines, fixing sprinklers, install concrete patios & walkways, build fencing & gates, etc. Would he be a civil engineer since he does the planning, designs, constructing, and maintenance?
Y'all really helped me a lot. Thanks all!!!
Well....landscaping is a small part of the civil engineering department, right? Is landscape Landscape Architecture part of the engineering department too?
Answer: I think if you ask most people they'd say no - although if you want to call a landscaper that then by all means go right ahead. After all if they have social engineers and sports engineers then why shouldn't there be landscaping engineers. In general though an engineer is someone who is a professional in the "application of science to designing things: the application of science in the design, planning, construction, and maintenance of buildings, machines, and other manufactured things "
I think that landscaping has many elements in it that can use engineering to benefit it. Of course you mentioned many civil engineering aspects there such as building patios and walkways, fences, etc.
Question: How much roughly will a corgi registered engineer to connect a gas boiler? Neighbour had a gas condencing boiler , water tank and tank in the attic fitted but he is not registered corgi. He is getting a corgi registered engineer to come out and connect the gas to the boiler as all the pipes are all in place. Will he produce a certificate for this work and how much do you think this would cost. She has been quoted over a thousand pounds just to get the gas connected and provide a certificate.
Answer: There is more to being Gas Safe registered than connecting gas pipes.
Has the the boiler and flue been fitted to the manufacturers instructions and Benchmark requirements? No,as you have to be suitably qualified in the first place.
No registered installer should connect and notify the boiler as they would be breaching the regulations,so if you do get someone to do it for you,can you be sure that they are going to do it right as they would obviously have no regards for the regs anyway.
Question: What is the first Piping system to be installed in a boat (Tug)? I am a student in Mechanical Engineering and one of my assignment is the Piping system of a tug boat.
I have made a layout for the entire 25 piping system and as I reviewing it. I asked to myself " What must be the first system to be installed?"
Is there a web site for this?
Answer: Dear Friend,
Using B31.3 for the processing piping design, you can check your piping system.
As in boat tug you are using water , stream etc and ASME will cover all piping design detail but it is not free

Question: Where the gas pipes enter my flat, there is always a "metallic" smell, which my gas engineer says is not gas? is he right?
Answer: Gas companies put a rotten egg odor in natural gas so you know if there is a leak, it will not smell metallic, also agree with the above answers that state the gas company uses monitors to look for leaks and if they say its OK I would believe them.

Question: Can a color blind person take up oil & gas design jobs? Can a color blind person apply for design jobs such as Piping Engineer, Structural Engineer etc.?
As far as I'm concern, the analysis results of FEA software such as Caesar II, ANSYS, Abaqus, Orcaflex, Flexcom are all color coded.
Therefore, I would like to know whether it is possible for a color blind person to take up these jobs?
Answer: I don't see why not. Changing the color preference in each of those programs shouldn't be too hard.
Besides when you say someone is color blind it doesn't mean they cant see all colors. They just have some level of difficult discerning between two color, (red/green or Blue/purple).
Question: The benefits and disadvantages of the Piping course from IIT, mum? Is it worth it? I am a fresh chemical engineer.
Answer: whether the course is worth or not, you will have the brand name of IIT with you after the course. And all most all the courses in IIT is worth and not only the course, you will have a different exposure there which you can get no where. All the best.
Question: Anyone have the Piping Engineering notes?
Answer: Not being smart, but can't you research that online? It may take some searching.
Question: how can getting basic calculations for piping design? the text is concerning with oil piping engineering
Answer: There are many books on piping design. You need to do a web search and find one on basic piping design.
Not knowing what kind of oil piping you are talking about there are other documents that are very important. Depending on the application one of the ANSI Codes for either refinery piping design or the one for pipeline design are recommended.
Question: In Plant Engineering, who designs and develops the original Plot Plan. Plant Design Engr.belongs to which dept? Generally refinement of the Plot Plan is done by the piping dept of the consultancy services. Original Basic Plot Plan is designed by the Plant Design Engineer. But he belongs to whom ? Client or consultant ? If consultant, then which department of consultancy services ? Plant engineering or Piping Engineering ?
Answer: The control of the plot plant varies with various projects.
I have seen some where the client has very specific requirements that must be met and they retain complete control over the plot plan as they have laid it out.
In other cases the client will set a general plot plan and let the designers work out the optimum layout for cost, construction considerations and plant operations. This requires interaction between several groups.
There are other occasions where the project manager or project engineer retains control over the plot plan. This can be for various reasons such as a need to meet specific project goals regarding compliance with regulations, laws or other contractual requirements.
In my experience the plot plan design and modifications are driven by many considerations from various engineering disciplines, construction needs, operations requirements and personal preference. I have never seen the piping design as the controlling factor or group.
