Question: Should I become a Mechanical Drafter? I'm almost 23 years old and need a stable job. I'm working at a warehouse and making 15 an hour plus a lot of mandatory overtime, but I don't like the job, the hours or the fact that I have to work evenings and weekends. I'm not trying to spend for years in college so I think a degree in mechanical drafting may be a good fit for me. What do yall think???
Mechanical Drafting uses computer software such as autocad, revit...
Answer: Hasn't mechanical drafting been made obsolete by computer assisted drafting (CAD)? You might want to check out prospects for CAD.
Question: How much would a Mechanical/ and or architectual drafter make an hour.. say entry level and after 5 years.?
Answer: Go to http://www.salary.com/ or http://www.salaryexpert.com/ and enter the data for the job.
Question: Who's a mechanical Drafter? What exactly do you do on a mechanical drafting job...tell me in detail..I just graduated from a technical highschool studying mechanical drafting and was told by my instructor that typically, the company will just give you a couple of blue prints or drawings to draw up on a copmuter software like AutoCad etc. Is this true?
Also being that I have 4 years of mechanical drafting...say that i go to college for 2 years studying mechanical engineering will that be a plus to a company hiring drafters though I have a 2 year degree in engineering?
Oh, and I meant 2 years of mechanical engineering
Answer: I'm mechanical design engineer myself, well your instructor is almost correct. But when your experience develop you also can be a mechanical designer yourself. You have learn how engineering part design and dimension, you will pick up the skills and be a designer yourself.
Yes they will hire you.. mechanical designer is a fun and challenging jobs. I really enjoying it. There is a lot other drafting program for mechanical engineer out there use.. such as autocad, catia, pro-engineer, unigraphic and Solidworks. My personal favorite is Solidworks.
Question: Mechanical drafting/detailing? What is the difference? What is the difference between a mechanical drafter and a mechanical detailer? I've never been able to distinguish the two. And I have never been able to get a firm answer on what a "red-line drawing" is. Can anyone help on that one?
Answer: A drafrsman ( person) does or can do both general arrangement and detail drawings.
A drafter can be mechanical, architectural, structural, civil, electrical, instrumentation, process and control. Among these are layouts, plans and elevations, assemblies , sections and arrangements. Also among these there are details of sub- assemblies, specific parts, specific arrangements all where more precise information is needed.
For instance a machine design project can have overall assembly drawings, internal section views, and parts details on separate pages. And the machine detail part drawings will even involve more than one view. Notes and materials specifications, tolerances, finishes, can also be categorized as details and can appear on assemblies and details as needed..
A "redline drawing" is a review mark-up print of the original showing corrections or alterations, usually in colored pencil.
India ink was used years ago generally and may be found in use now, but rarely. As an aside, "blueprints" really were blue and involved a duplicating process involving ammonia. Now long obsolete.
Question: Mechanical Drafters? What's the difference between a regular drafter and a mechanical drafter in engineering industries setting.
Answer: It would have to do with what you are drawing.
Drafters could be doing architectural drawings, machine -parts, pipes, cables, heating systems and much other topics. Mechanical is usually limited to machine parts, assemblies or plant design .

Answer: Karla, by chance I am someone who is keen on the history of inventions, and so I thought of RICHARD TREVITHICK who built the world's first locomotive, but... (There's too often a BUT in biographies.)
So I can advise you an interesting biography which can provide you with lots of details you need. (At least I hope for it!) To make sure the addres reaches you I write it in two lines:
www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk
(co.uk) after UK =>/RAtrevithik.htm
And again:After the three www dot it is spartacus dot schoolnet dot co dot uk slash RAtrevithick ((as one word,RA in capital letters, followed by the name of trevithick like this, dot htm
Good luck! (And for myself the luck would be that the address reaches you "unharmed".)

Question: are there any jobs similar to drafting? are there any jobs similar to being a drafter? please list as many as you know that are anything like it but not exactly
(please dont list electrical drafter or mechanical drafter etc.).
Answer: editor
Question: Does a Drafter help make prototypes/molds? Im thinking about getting an associates in CAD and I wanted to know do they help make prototypes/molds along side with like architects and mechanical engineers
Answer: It would probably depend on the size of company you work for, in large firms there is probably more specialization, in very small companies there may be a lot of overlap of various jobs.
I used to work at a place were I did; design, drafting, made prototypes, worked in production, helped with installations, unclogged toilets and shoveled melting snow off the roof when the roof drains clogged (when every one else got to stay home because of the snow), and it wasn't really all that small of company, about 100 employees.
So if they know you are able to do something, you may get to do it (especially unclogging toilets, roof drains and after hours installations)
Also you mention architects, I suspect architectural model making is closely related to drafting.
Question: Mechanical Pencils? Any drafters or architects out there what are you using for mechanical pencils? I have seen some where you can shake to dispense the lead or ones that automatically dispense from wear, anyone know the brand of these. Any recommendations would be appreciated also.
Answer: We use any type of pencils although, the one I use is Ticonderoga which is sold at Office Depot.
The erasure is fun and adjustable. The lead automatically fills in after one is too low.

Question: Job agency question.? I know with the economic mess, jobs are no where to be found, I'm not speaking about now, I'm speaking just in general.
I'm a mechanical drafter and usually get my jobs through job agencies. When you look up my field on monster, the companies have the agency advertise and pick the people.
I want to move to a different state, is it possible a job agency here get me connected to a job in another state? I know the agencies I've used (Aerotek, man power, think energy group) have offices all over the country.
Thanks!
Answer: Yes, it's very possible for one of the agencies mentioned to assist with job placement in another state. I know Aerotek and Manpower have websites that give you access to their openings in the different cities & states. You could also consult one of their job placement coordinators in your local city to see what's available and where.
Question: Going to college in the Philippines? Ok, I have a few questions. First, I live in New Jersey (USA) and am planning on attending college in PH next year. I've taken my SAT's but I want to know, is it even required?
And I'm currently taking architecture in a vocational school. My mother tells me that if I go to PH, I'll have a boring 1st year since I've taken it this year. Last year I passed the ADDA, it's an American drafter's test so I'm a Certified Mechanical Drafter. Is it going to mean anything if I go to PH?
I also want to know, is it worth it going there instead of here? I know it's so much cheaper going there but is it really going to help me for my future? My first choice was to go to Pratt Institute in NY but that's way too much money, roughly $31,800 per year.
Also, since I'm going to another country, am I eligible for any scholarships?
And life there, is it better than America? I've only been there as a child.
Basically, I need as much help as I can get hehe.
Answer: I think most if not all the subjects that you took there in the US will be credited in a college degree course (depending on the course that you will attend and if the school you went to in the US is accredited by your Department of Education) Have you checked out some schools you can get into? For Engineering courses, you can try University of the Philippines, Mapua Insitute of Technology. I doubt it if you get a scholarship upon enetering but they normally give scholarships for outstanding or exemplary students here in the Philippines. So you have to keep your grades high if you want to apply for scholarship. The tuition is very much lower as compared to the US but still some schools and universities are still comparable to International standards. Just choose wisely. Yes, SAT is required and you have to ask the registrar's or admisssions department of the school you wanted to enroll in. Life here as a student is worth it depends on how you handle changes, but I do not think you will have any trouble adjusting. People are very friendly and English is well understood. You will learn a whole lot from the experience in living and studying here. Check the websites of the top schools and universities here.
Question: Put in a lower level Algebra and Chemisty?!? Hey. School starts up again in 3 weeks and I got my schedule. The normal classes are Algebra 3-4 and Chemistry. I was put into "Intro to chemistry" and "Integrated Algebra 3-4" basically lower level, slower paced classes. I am a certified mechanical drafter and engineer, so I'm quite good at mathematics, I just got a little too lazy and had some c's, thus put into those 2 classes. What do I do, I'm stressing out a lot that a university will see me as slow paced, I feel dumb, and off track. Do I talk to the teacher? The counselor? I'm very frustrated and cant enjoy my last weeks of summer over this! Please help me on what to do. I know I should of retaken it over summer and I regret that but what are my options now? I am a junior in high school this upcoming year.
Answer: Do your best in those classes, and once the teachers realize that you are too advanced for the class, then move you. But you will actually have to work for that to happen, not go back to slacking. Talking to some one in charge wouldn't hurt either.
Question: Any headhunters in Chicago specializing in...? Mechanical Design/Drafting using Pro-E? My financee moved here from NJ in late April and has yet to find a job. He's been a Mechanical Designer/Drafter for over 8 years and the only places he can find are contract jobs (for 6 months to a year). It would be nice to find him a full-time job (non-contract) so he can have health insurance. We're located in northern Arlington Heights. Thanks.
And this isn't an ad. Just keeping the question short and to the point.
Answer: Tell him to take the contract jobs; they often lead to direct employment. (By the way, next time that you post a question, try not to make it look like an ad, or you may get reported for violating the guidelines.)
Question: How much is the salary should I ask for? I am going to have an interview with a company.
Just wonder how much usually is ,and how much should I ask for in this kind of job?

Question: Should I continue to get my bachelors degree? I have an A.S. Degree in Automotive Technology and a One year cert in mechanical design. I work as a drafter, pay is okay, some future advancement is in sight, I like my job. I have a few years experience as an automotive tech and a engineering tech.
I have $5000 in student loans. With life situations I don't have much time or money to get my BA degree. If i'm settled in with a job is it really worth it?
I was thinking of doing night classes as a state university. It will cost me only $10,000 to get, so I'll have $15,000 in loans. The degree is in Communications and Culture.
Would this type of degree help me in job advancement?
Answer: I would go with a business management degree so you could seek a promotion in the company you work for now, or one like it, since you already have experience in the field.
Question: Am I getting short changed as a navy seabee? I have decided to join the navy I went into the recruiters office not knowing what job I wanted. I took the practice ASVAB and got a 67 on it. My recruiter said I would be best as a undesignated seaman. I did research on it and found out its for people who flunk the ASVAB (I was very offended and no longer trusted the recruiter). So I went to Meps and ended up getting a 90 on my ASVAB. I chose to be a Utilitiesman because my resume includes an associates degree in Mechanical Engineering. 2 years experience as an Air Conditioning installer. And one year experience as a Hvac Drafter. I hated being a drafter because I hated being inside all day. So I still haven't found the downside to being a seabee/utilitiesman. But on the way home from Meps my recruiter tried to get me to go into the nuke program. Because I scored a 90 on the ASVAB. Keep in mind this is the same recruiter who wanted me to be an undesignated Seaman. So am I selling my self short by being a seabee with a 90 ASVAB score.
Answer: Hey man i got a 78 ASVAB and they tried to get me for nuke too. Im a UT, active duty navy seabees, and it has its ups and downs. For starters, im not saying seabees are dumb...BUT... you only need a 35 on the asvab to get into the bees. so test wise- if you are as smart as your score says you are, you will have a serious edge on advancement. i made E5 in 2 years. if you have leadership ability you will find yourself moving up the ladder faster than you even know it. it feels like yesterday i was the new guy to battallion, and now people work for me. once your in the bees you will be so happy you never went to the fleet. if youre going to join, go to the green side of the navy.
Question: Whats the best online school for engineering? I've been working in the engineering industry as a drafter for 5 years now, and I wanted to improve my status to designer, and my work recommended I get a A.S. or B.S. in engineering (it doesn't matter if its civil or mechanical or electrical or electronics, because I'm multi-disciplined). I can not go to a regular college or a community college because of wear I currently live from my work (an hour and half away, so I don't get home til 6:30 or 7:00, not counting if I do overtime) Whats the best online school to go to (most respected by employers)?
Answer: You can easily compare info about these schools in this site - schools.iblogger.org
Question: 3 months till navy (bootcamp). Need tips on curing neurosis? The past four years of my life have been hell. My neurosis was caused by the amount of stress I was put through during that time.
The first stressor was trying to find a career after high school.(I finished an associates degree in mechanical engineering tech.)
The second was that I surrounded myself with friends that were neurotics( Including a girlfriend who was the queen of neurosis and constantly blamed me for problems in the relationship)
Thirdly I took a job as a drafter where most my co-workers were on depression medication.
The first step I took was to quit my job to have some alone time and relax.
The next step is to join the seabees so I can learn how to do more guy stuff and learn better social skills.
I am slowly but surely learning how to be more relaxed during my 3 month "vacation". I am having lots of success
I am looking for tips and activities to help me become a more relaxed person so I won't be so uptight while im in the navy.
Answer: First things first You will become a new man not who you are now this one will be eliminated.
When you enter the base Your life as you know it now stops It no longer is wanted.
You are going to become a new person a new American a new way of seeing things
Boot camp is the place where your mind is retrained to think as a group not as one.
When you leave your first meeting of the DI you will get a new vision of what a man is. One you have never know existed. A real Man.
And you are in the best place on planet earth to learn how to become this new man.
So do not worry about what you are now that is going to be deleted when you become a seaman recruit and when you leave you will be called a Seaman.
I have been there in the Coast Guard at Capemay N.J boot camp and stayed in and retired in "1986" and I just turned 61 and only work when I get bored.
