Answer: Practise using the software and take advice from those more experienced than yourself. Check out www.cadjunky.com for some useful hints and tips. Try using other CAD packages too. Maths isn't the be all and end all. I haven't worked out a Partial Differential or a Laplace transform since University. It will depend on your job to what degree and detail calculations will be required. A basic understanding in most engineering disciplines is a good start - thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mechanics {statics and dynamics}, material properties. etc... Being able to problem solve in a logical manner is a good skill. To become a better Engineer I would recommend learning from your and others' mistakes and not making them twice. When you finish a project take time to reflect on it and think what you would have done differently or more efficiently. Then on your next project you can apply what you learned to do a better job.

Answer: Your best bet would be to look for a job in the UK with a US based employer or a UK employer with US offices and then try for an internal transfer. There are only two ways to get the proper paperwork to work in the US. Either by green card lottery or by work visa. Since you are from the UK you are SOL on the green card lottery. It's a diversity lottery and being a Brit you are exempt, there are too many Brits working in the US as it is. The other way is through a work VISA, however you need to be sponsored by an employer. Working as a CAD draftsman isn't that specialized of a job to have an employer sponsor you from overseas, hence the internal transfer route suggested.

Answer: The above answers are of very little value. You need to be more clear in expressing what you mean by "design engineer." There are many excellent engineering schools, so look at the ones nearest you first. Mainly, what *most* people mean by any kind of real design engineer is someone with a 4 year (min) degree from a ABET certified engineering curriculum. The hard fact is that means lots of Math. First year is 2 semesters of differential/integral calculus. Second year is multivariate calculus then differential equations. After that, some choices between partial differential equations, advanced math for science/engineering, stochastic methods, and advanced probability theory. Take the calculus sequence at your local community college or inexpensive junior college. See how you do (really must get B's or better) then try your luck with the calculus-based physics sequence they offer. It'll be even harder. These 4 courses are the foundation upon which everything real engineers later learn is built. There are other ways to indulge your passion for new ideas if this doesn't work out for you. The Calculus and Physics credits will transfer to any school you later attend. But if you can't master those 4 courses, you'll have to re-think your plan.
