Answer: The quick answer is that it depends on the organization - there are no hard and fast rules. However, my thought would be that the Software Development Manager would a resource manager, with developers reporting to them. The technical manager would also have people reporting to them, but they could be QA people, or other specific technical disciplines (perhaps developers) The software project manager might not have people reporting to them, but would be focusing on the project processes across the organization, rather than on the technical solution.

Answer: I would suggest to find out the Commissions office main number and call them up, then ask for the appropriate department that handles street lights issues, and then mail the letter to that department. Question: I need advice on my final year undergraduate project in Business Information Systems.? As a direct entrant to final year undergraduate BIS programme from an engineering (Land Surveying) background, I would like to write a project where I develop something using GIS. Problem is I do not know what to do. I think this stems from my limited programming skills. We have already written 1 group project and 1 individual project both of which were dissertations which is why I do not want to write another dissertation, believing (rightly or wrongly that) a development project will increase my chances of getting higher marks. Is there anyone out there with any advice on what I can or should do w.r.t. GIS and what I should learn in order to develop it?

Answer: There is a lot you can do with your GIS knowledge. Geodetics is a hot area, with applications to measure reservoirs using aerial spot data etc. You really don't have to code the program, if your focus is not programming, but more into solution design. You could develop the Architectural Document followed by Solution Design. These are the crucial parts of a program design and need a deep knowledge of the Solution Domain (GIS, in your case) and not much to do with programming itself. The third and the fourth parts (Component Design and Component Delivery Modules) are usually where a lot of programming knowledge is required. Good luck. Answer: PMP--> costs less, opportunity is very specific and less compared to MBA. However, MBA will open up more opportunities than only project management.

Answer: One thing to keep in mind is that in real world situations, you will always have errors logged, that is because differences in temperature, pressure, humidity, and even solar flares will disturb extremely sensetive test equipment. No program that I know of will execute perfectly in a real world situation, because the parameters will not perform to the "known" set of inputs. There needs to be a backlog program that will dump certain unknowns from the list, so as not to confuse the main program while it is running. To make it a visual set, it needs communication with the main program, but the communication itself will change some parameters. When there are too many problems, a lot of mainframes will do an internal dump to protect itself from being damaged, same as a computer will eventually stop when it is figuring out pi, there giving you the non-existent xyz, probably the original programmer.

Answer: A couple of areas which have high payoff is lightweight impact resistant design (how to best absorb the energy on a collision, for multiple type impacts) without adding a lot of mass. A higher tech option, which most everyone uses, but has some value is developing better energy storage technology for hybrid or electric cars= High capacity batteries, maximize energy efficiency, minimize high currents which require large, heavy conducting elements. A third option is lightweight noise suppression (filter out both engine and external noise (street noise, aerodynamically induced noise etc. Try to do it without adding a lot of weight to the existing design

Answer: You need to send your resume out to real jobs you are qualified to do. In your cover letter you need to state that you wish to work remotely, from your home office. LOTS of companies, especially in CA operate this way. I hope to make the transition from Real Estate Development / City Planning into Construction Management after the completion of my MBA. Because I am a construction management major and have been in the business for almost 8 years and have thought about going into real estate development and city planning. You have a pretty good start. I assume you want to become a project manager. I would try to find a general contractor in the area who has a project engineering opportunity or a field engineering position. Make sure you get exposure to cost, schedule, and budgetary management as well as the details of the flow of work where you have interest (Commercail, Residential, Civil, Industrial). If you have a background in real estate, I would say a combination of residential and commercial would be where you would want to focus. Be honest with the general contractor. Tell him/her where you have interest and what experience you have and don't have. They just want to know you have interest in the industry and are curious. You definitely have enough experience to get your foot in the door. You don't need an engineering degree to become a successful project manager. In some cases it is extremely beneficial...if you are interested at working at an oil refinery or industrial setting they prefer people with a mechanical and chemical engineering background. It really depends on the nature of the work you are going to be involved in. But working for a general contractor where it's more construction driven than engineering driven...there is no need for an engineering degree. After a couple of years in the field you will want to make sure and get your PMP. Right now you need field experience more than formal schooling. Make sure you are familiar with software programs like Primavera and Project, and extremely proficient in Excel and Access.

There is one episode called 'Spider', which documents the design and manufacturing of the first LEM which they called Spider due to it's, well...spider like look. These careers would compliment your current degree and experience. Answer: These are both much broader fields than you'd think. As an engineering grad student, engineering physics also deals a lot with plasma physics and nano-technology. Aerospace engineering can be based in fluid flow, computation, dynamics and controls, or structural. If you're a new or young student, I'd recommend taking a variety of courses from each field and seeing which one you enjoy more.

Engineer A then may charge clients the market price for his or her work. Take a situation with another professional, an attorney. I chose the Hi-Tech configuration which is designed for Graphic Intensive Use. Its possible uses are Web page design, Engineering drawings, game development, etc... What is the best OS for my computer? Oh and what is a good video card that would be best for my computer?

Answer: I would recommend using windows XP. Windows vista is becoming more prominent but it greatly decreases the speed of graphic rendering and game-play so i would try to avoid it for now (at least until the SP1 has been released). A good graphics card would be an Nvidia Gforce 8600GS or any Nvidia Gforce 8 series preferably with at least 256mb of video memory. But it also depends on your processor; if you have an AMD processor then ATI graphics cards run better where-as nvidia run better with Intel. I hope this information will be of some use to you :)
