Question: Electrical engineers: Remote control/automation question? I have a cabinet with a sliding door and I want to automate it and control it with a remote control.
I figured I could buy a small motor with a cord/pulley connected to the door, and I could probably buy a generic remote somewhere.
Can someone tell me how to make this work or a book or website that can help me out?
I assume I would need a small dc motor that opens the door and reverses current to close the door? Is that right? How would it know when to stop? And what kind of device is used to reverse the current? Or should it be done a completely different way?
I appreciate the help.
Answer: Hi Robert,
There are several ways to accomplish this task. Using a simple IR transceiver and receiver will suffice for your communication. You should consider using a microcontroller for motor control.
Try looking up a 8-pin PICAXE microcontroller. They are very simple to program and there is a lot of documentation on simple wireless projects like this one.
You could either use a gear system where the motor will move the sliding door open and close by pushing or pulling a chain.
You could use a pulley system as you suggest but it may be more fickle to deal with.
You may also want to consider an actuator system using a dc motor. This is also simple to implement.

Question: I am looking for electrical power engineering degree and it's hard to find....? Hey I am interested in master of Electrical engineering course. Yes I think first I am going to do bachelor (3 years) and then master (2 years).
However most electrical engineering courses I found, focus on electronics, embedded systems, control systems (automation etc), power electronics and electric drives, software engineering, computer science and so...
My major interest are however power electric systems and I am rather interested in themes such electric grid, power generators and transformers, high voltage equipment, circuit breakers and fuses.
It is hard to find such courses. Does it mean that such subjects are insufficient for studying master in electrical engineering? And now only future is in rapidly developing tech branches such as electronics and computer science? I do not find so much intersting all that electornics/computer stuff. I would like deal with power electric equipment, is it obsolete now?
Please help, Greets;)
Answer: Electric power is a field with a sustained demand for qualified engineers. Unfortunately, its not as 'sexy' as digital electronics. That means that the number of schools that offer curricula in this area is limited.
In the US, the leading power schools are: Cornell, Clarkson, Georgia Tech, Illinois - Champlain, Texas A&M, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Iowa State, UC Berkeley (mainly power economics), and Colorado School of Mines
Question: Can everybody be engineer? Hello
I am Master in Electrical /Electronic Engineering graduated in 2009
Presently working as junior engineer in industrial automation company.
However I am not sure if fit in all that tech stuff.
Honestly I studied engineering because of better job opportunities in the future ( I live in Eastern Europe where assured workplace and living funds could be problematic).
I find myself more humanities oriented. In high school was more oriented to history, language philology, geography. I was average in Math and even worse in Psychics and Informatics. I passed final high school exam in Mathematics and Psychics at good level but it took me long hours to get through it.
Going further it could be said that I sailed through my engineering studies. I managed to finish studies with good scores and during whole studying period haven't had any serious troubles with exams. However again I was spending a lot of time studying and didn't have many time for other activities. Another aspect is important to mention; my engineering course was mainly based on theoretical exams rather than practical (it is style of carrying engineering education in my country). Therefore with aid of system developed in high school (spending lot of time at doing a lot of exercises to find the universal solution method) I was very good at passing written exams.(mathematics, algebra, electrodynamics, circuit theory)In practical sessions (measurements, programming, laboratory work...) I was less efficient but managed to pass with minimum or average result.
As I said at the beginning I think am not well suited to engineering. In daily life I am rather intuitive than logical thinker.
My free time activities are not chess or other logical games. Neither I am computer geek, programmer. I am not assemble and take to pieces my PC much...
I have problems with math I think. (despite good grades at HS and Uni) All mathematics stuff quickly evaporates from my head.
After years of studying I cannot remember for example logarithm rules. Also it is difficult for me to make calculations without calculator (mental arithmetic)-even in the shop to calculate change! Also complicated engineering calculations take me a lot of time because I make plenty mistakes and need additional time to recall all that rules for various arithmetic calculations....
Maybe I am better in remembering dates and facts from the past, names of the novelist, geographical names and locations and so.....In present work I am quite reliable but just average worker, not enormously clever one....
After all can say that engineering topics are interesting but I feel not confident and gifted enough to handle it.
So it is a question: Can everybody be an engineer? Else only person with dedicated brain/ skills type could be?
Maybe I need hard training and experience to brush up my skills or it does not make sense in my case (wrong person in wrong place situation) ???
I feel rally lost in my situation.
Looking at one side ; I have engineering degree and maybe its pity to leave that way.
In other hand if all my work put in my engineering career seems to be worthless why to carry on with?
Really i do not know my flair. Maybe I should be journalist/ writer/ artist but never tried it. Also at age 25 it tend to be late for such experimentation....
Greets
Answer: Hardly anyone can be an engineer. It takes an exceptional mind to be a engineer. Just look at the freshman year class size for engineers versus the graduation rate.
Engineering is considered the most difficult program out there, exceeding even pre-med and the basic sciences. It is the computations along with analysis that makes it difficult. A good mind can memorize things. A great mind can memorize and analyze and conceptualize.
If you have the gift of easily passing your math courses you have a trait that not 2% of the population in any country has. Engineers are highly valued in most industrialized countries and is a very respectful position , even at entry level. I definitely don't see that respect for the humanities and business graduates.
It is the same reason we value medical doctors. It is a rigorous, long, intense mind exercise to graduate in this field, especially if you aren't good with math. At the career side of most companies that hire, everyone knows how intelligent you have to be to be an engineer. That is why their starting salaries are sometimes 100% greater than the liberal arts degrees.
But salaries are based on the difficulty of the program and the value to the company. Almost anyone can graduate with average intelligence in the humanities field. But here in the USA , the graduation rate for engineers is very low and the position is held with great regard
For you to already have graduated is good already. You have probably found out that the engineering you took in school is not to much like what you do at work.
Work is hardly ever pleasurable, but that goes for all the degrees. I have a friend who is an MD and he can't stand it and he has been a doctor less than 10 years. He thinks it is boring and a lot of gross things he has to carry out. He only stays with it for the money. He says if his investments pay off he is out of there.
Hardly anyone can remember their math from years ago. But give yourself credit. You seem to know your limitations and makes you question the occupation. The occupation is fine, maybe you need a different task to satisfy your creative and other orientations. Maybe a smaller firm that is job shop oriented, where each job is a new project and they utilize your brain more.
But don't make it seem like those humanities and other areas are so interesting, because they aren't. It all depends on the job, and environment and the people and the task. Sounds like you are going thru a round of "there's got to be more" syndrome. Maybe see if you can get a job with Mythbusters, Junkyard Wars or Howe and Howe type programs. They do engineering but with fun and low technology , which makes it less stressful to the brain but you get to see your creations come to life
Question: Is it a good IT career to work as a helpdesk agent in the networking field ? I'm working as a helpdesk agent in a worldwide networks provider
Sometimes I have the feeling that there is no growth in this job as the company is a flat organization , most of the Helpdesk agents do the same work , WHO WILL GET PROMOTED ??
I have another chance to work as an electrical engineer in the field of panel boards design and another job in the home automation field
So confused wether to continue with my current job or change this career
My study was electrical power engineering
Answer: Focus in on what it is you want to do. I started with help desk for a year advanced to a Sr. Programmer / QA Analyst and stayed in that field continuing to climb the corporate ladder, I'm now in school to finish up my degree in finance, because that is really where my interest is - wealth management. While I will be taking over a 50% decrease in pay, it's still what I am interested in. I can always return to IT if it turns out I don't like it, but don't think you won't advance, this is your opportunity to stand out and go the extra mile and show management why you are better than the others, if it is help desk that you want to stay in.
Question: I am interested in Robotics and Automation........? can you suggest a best school for Ms in above subject. Except US and in less expanses up to 5,00,000-10,00,000 Rs in Uk/Japan/Germany?

Answer: check out www.planeteducation.info/.it is in almost all major cities provides all information on study abroad, career counselling, entrence exams preparation like GRE,CAT,CET,GMAT,XAT,SAT,IELTS.
it is an excellent counselling organization with very friendly staff.
Question: Which field to go on with , home automstion or computrt networking? I've been working in the home automation field and then switched to computer networking , I'm an electrical engineer . So confused which career should I go with.
Answer: nothing that requires a grasp of the english language... JUST KIDDING. Go with what you enjoy most... I don't know alot about electrical engineering mind you. but if you feel happier doing one more than the other... then go for it.
Question: Where can I find a list of the engineering companies in Toronto - Canadá? I'm looking for an opportunity in electrical engineering, with experience in instrumentation and automation
Answer: I would suggest going to your industry association first. A second option is the phone book.
Question: career electrical engineering? i am instrument electrical eng.student and i am about to take 2 of the 4 subject for electives, here the subject:
1)process control
2)automation and robotic
3)measurement and instrumentation
4)control system 3
i am thinking to involve in maintainance, oil and gas or maybe aircraft maintainance..after grad.
what is the subject is suitable and what is the subject advantage and disadvantage.....
i want get some advice before make the decision....tq
Answer: Well.. it is very good major
Oil and Gas companies need ur major since the instrumentation is controlling the whole units. Huge Essential System and very critical in any refinery such as:
DCS : Digital Control Center.
ESD: Emergency Shutdown.
UPS: Uninterrupted Power Supply ( Electrical Equipment feeds instrument load)
I think u have a bright future with this discipline if you have interests . And regarding these Subjects, i dont know much about control

Question: Electrical Engineering Student, which field should I choose If I want to specialize in:? My University offers both: (( 1- Communications and Electronics 2- Power and Control )) Programs.
And those are the specialties:
1-Power
2-Control
3-Image Processing.
4-Signal Processing.
5- Optoelectronic.
6- Biomedical.
7- Plasma.
8- Electromagnetic.
9- Robotics.
10- Automation.
11- Electronics and Car Electronics.
Which program offered by my university should I choose to enroll any of them? I need your help please because I must choose in the upcoming 3 weeks..
I most interested in Control, Car Electronics, Robotics and Optoelectronic most....Please help me with any detail you think is important to be considered.
Thanks!
Answer: The other answerer said Automation. I think that is more applicable to industrial settings than is robotics, though they have many things in common. These days robotics is used mainly in industrial settings, but eventually will branch out.
Robotics is more theoretical and thus more challenging. The pay is probably higher than for automation, but at least for the present I think there are more available jobs for automation engineers.
I can't imagine that car electronics would hold much of a future for you. Nearly every industry needs automation engineers, but only the auto industry need car electronics engineers.
If you REALLY love robotics, go for that. Otherwise go for automation. But look up automation in Wikipedia first and make sure you like what you see.
Question: I am lost please help? Hi to all, please I need ur advice I’m 34 yrs old working in maintenance dept. in a bank I am electrical engineer with fire panels, automation in oil n gas and good experience in IT but need to be refreshed, I’m also fan of web design and 3d modeling software. Now I am lost and need someone to lead me what to do shall I go for cisco certs and it will so beneficial in the bank specially if it is related to security certs or it is late and needs time and experience ? shall I go web design and be 3d pro. modeler ? or shall I do nothing I like to study again and take certs that will supports me these days specially in the IT or 3D please I need your advise all of you if you are in my place what u will do? Please I need ur opinions and suggestions.
Answer: Hi zoot22,
If 3D modeling is your passion, then go for it! The most successful people in the industry are ones who truly love what they're doing and they have natural talent.
If you're into the network security stuff, then go for the Cisco certification, but if you find those things dull, you will regret it.
My advise is to do what you do well, and not spread yourself too thin. Don't bite off too much at once. Be well-rounded, but find a specific technology and focus on it primarily.
It's never too late. Build applications for yourself, friends, colleagues, and local businesses. Get your start by building real-world applications/solutions for people to use. Then, you'll have experience solving problems and be ready for employment in a large company. I suggest large companies because that's where the money is. It's hard to make a living being a small, freelance potato.
Best regards,
subexpression
Question: where to i get info of electrical/mechanical engineering components, accessories, sensors, and functions? hi, I'm not an engineer. i work in a factory which involves hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, manual packaging, cooling systems, furnaces. i would like to automate what i can in the factory to lessen the work load of our workers. i would like to know what i can use for automation of machines for improvements, like limit switches, sensors, delay switches, etc. and there functions. it would help me have an idea for designing, and to know whats possible. thank you.
Answer: Go find an engineer specializing in Process Control. There are two pitfalls in automation in particular that need to be addressed. One is the safety of the personnel and the other is the safe operation of the machinery. The first necessity is obvious, but the second involves making sure that there are no automatic situations in which the equipment can damage itselt. As an example of this, imagine having a thermostatically controlled heater on a container of liquid. Imagine that the container is accidentally empty. Will the heater be sufficiently smart that it does not overheat the container, being unable to sense the temperature inside it? Could happen if it weren't designed right. I guess I'm trying to suggest that there is much more than just picking stuff out of catalogs.
Question: Electrical and Information Engineering Technology major? Thinking of going back to school to (finally) get a 4-year degree. I work in industrial automation/robotics. An Electrical Enginieering degree would suit me perfectly, but there is no EE major offered at any colleges close enough for me to attend.
The local University offers and Electrical and Information Engineering Technology major. The course load looks to be simply covering everything I do now.
I'm wondering how an Engineering Technology degree compares with an actual Engineering degree?
Answer: Mike, first of all, I want to commend your decision to go back to school. It's tough, but worth it. I myself went back to school to obtain a second BS degree after deciding that my initial career choice was not for me. As CW pointed out, there are differences in the EE v EET degrees. Before spending too much time and money, you might want to decide if you ever want to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). Many states do not allow those with Technology degrees to become PE's. Also, many states require that an engineering degree (tech degrees in some states) be obtained from an ABET accredited school. You may also want to contact IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.,) and see if they have any advice or a local chapter (student or professional). I urge you to get involved with IEEE or ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) if you go back to school.
Good luck.
Question: What to do with a deadbeat boyfriend? I have been involved with this guy for almost six years. We both had houses but he moved in with me about 4 years ago. He rented his house out for what the mortgage payment was. Then his 16 year old son moved in with us. We have had numerous "discussions" about him paying his share of the bills (since his house was rented out). There was always one reason or another why he couldn't help out. I had a good job and was managing but I would have been able to save money if he would have helped.
We got engaged 3 years ago. Then in December of 2007 he lost his job. I told him "we'll be OK" and I'll help out as much as I can" because we were suppose to be a "team". He has 2 bachelors degrees (one in electrical engineering and one in robotics and automation). I figured it shouldn't be too tough for him to find a job so I didn't stress too much when he passed up on several but did remind him that he had to start helping with the bills that I couldn't do it on my own anymore. Needless to say he still doesn't have a job but he has been collecting unemployment and has made some pretty good money selling items on ebay and other forums.
He had started "borrowing" money from me before losing his job. As it continued and began to add up I started to keep track of what he borrowed and paid back. These were clearly discussed as loans. This does not include me paying for half of 2 vehicles for him and loaning him the money for the other half, as well as numerous other items. Gifts were and are gifts but loans were clearly discussed as loans.
I have asked him several times to sign the list of what he has borrowed and paid back but he has always refused.
Now in June I lost my job, have gone through all of my savings, and have about a thousand dollars left to my name. My house will soon be listed as a short sale, the utilities soon to be shut off, and shortly thereafter my vehicle will more than likely be repoed because I can't pay. I will be moving in with my 20 year old daughter. He was suppose to sell the Harley to pay me back some money but is now saying that there is a lien against it - which I know is yet another lie. I haven't been able to get him out of the house and yesterday when I told him we had maybe a month left he said "This is a time when we need to stick together. I thought we were a team." I find out today that he's been telling neighbors for months that he was going to move out - probably started at the time I lost my job.
He owes me about $17,000. Any suggestions on getting the money back or just posting your comments to this wonderful mess I have gotten myself into would be appreciated. And yes, I know that I let this situation go on for toooooooooooooooooooo long. Mostly writing to vent and perhaps get some resourceful comments. Thanks in advance.
(I apologize in advance for rambling - darn those female emotions that just run rabid sometimes and make it difficult to get things out in an understandable manner.)
Answer: u could take him to small claims court, maybe get back some of your money. he was using u all along to better himself, and save his money while he used yours. u should not have let it begin in the first place, and its a hard lesson learned. but your not the first nor will u be the last. u have a man with no conscious. couldn't u get rid of him and get a paying roommate and try to keep the home u have worked so hard for?

Answer: no thanks i have a different line.
Question: Can't decide between Physics, ME or EE? I need to choose a major but can't decide between physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering. I like to study physics and see how the world and universe works and functions, but I think mechanical engineering and electrical engineering have better job opportunities and cool skills to learn. Physics would take me less time to complete and I am going to an expensive college so I'm also trying to get out school quicker.
I hear engineers spend most of their time in front of computer though and that mechanical engineers are will either lose jobs due to outsourcing or automation which I find hard to believe. Somebody has to make the things that electronics are put inside of. I'm probably over thinking but I want something with physics that I can have a secure future in.
I would like to get my PhD in physics or engineering one day and do research.
So what would you recommend?
Answer: I got a BS in Physics. In my last year or more, the math required was well beyond my comfort level. Also I was told that I would need to continue on to a MS degree to have good job prospects.
I decided to switch -- to get an MS in EE. It didn't take any longer than if I had gotten BS and MS both in EE. My mix of studies seemed to appeal to prospective employers. I chose to work for Honeywell at an Aerospace division. My first assignment involved test and development of electronics for a gyroscope assembly. I consider myself an engineer with an interest in physics.
I couldn't compare ME and EE for you. EE was the choice for me.
Question: what is best...????? ok,I want to do a bachelor degree in electrical engineering and a master degree.I can do my master in communication or in controls and automation.Which is better and have more future and demand???????????
Answer: Communications is more useful if you want to go into management in future. If you wana stay in engineering as a engineer, then take the former.

Question: Which field of engineering would be best for me? I am looking into studying engineering but am not exactly sure which branch to jump into. I studied architecture and industrial design as an undergrad and enjoy product design- specifically commercial, social (like Lifestraw and One Laptop per child) and medical. However, I want a greater understanding of technology and am interested in electronics, automation, robotics, software, and biomedical. I may not intend to work specifically as an engineer, but I have an entrepreneurial and creative spirit and would like to have the knowledge of an engineer when designing these products. At the moment I am considering either computer science or mechanical engineering (even though I understand my interests also fall into electrical and biomedical). Basically this is a difficult decision and I was hoping some of you experienced folks could tell me which field would incorporate all of my interests the best. Thanks everyone.
Answer: You seem to be interested in lots of things, but before you decide what subjects you study further, you can take some course lectures related to the subjects that you want to study. Then you may figure out what subject you really want to study more. The following site may help you.

You could do your masters and focus on aerospace engineering or focus on electronics ot automation.
Just to make things clear MBA stand for masters of Business at my university.
Question: Solar Power Eco-Development Engineering Questions...? I'm considering integrating solar power systems and components into an eco-development here in Costa Rica. I have some questions in order to budget for these systems:
I cant determine if we need a "grid-tie" system or an "off-grid" system. I believe we need parts from both, or a "hybrid" system. I want to offer solar power as a standalone system with a large battery backup that utilizes the solar power until the batteries are exhausted. When there is no power left from the batteries, it would automatically switch to local power company, only as a backup. It is doubtful that the local government-controlled power company would issue credits for "selling power back to the grid", so a "grid-tie" system as shown on your packages would not work. The energy from the solar panels would have to route into a large battery bank, not back to the grid. It is also different from an "off-grid system" in that, if depleted, the system would need to automatically switch to local power source.
This solar power system would need "pure sine wave" inverters - capable of supplying energy to any standard appliance as well as a sensitive automation control system with touchscreens in the home. I believe the Magnum MS4448 (http://www.wholesalesolar.com/products.folder/inverter-folder/Magnum_MS4448.html) fits the bill, but I'm not sure.
Finally, I would like to link 7 of these eco-home solar power systems together in order to capitalize on power sharing for a more reliable and robust system - especially since it is likely that at least 1-2 homes would not be occupied (they're vacation properties) at any given time. I believe that by burying Romex electrical lines between the homes and linking each homes' bank of batteries would do this... correct? Then, just one of these systems would be linked to the power company to switch over once all batteries are drained - since the charge would be evenly dispersed across all homes.... correct?
I would use locally-bought marine-grade batteries for storing charges in each eco-dome. I'm not sure how many batteries or what type. I would want each 2,000 sq.ft. eco-home to be as self-sustaining as possible on solar power. Assuming a maximum power draw of 500KWhs per home per month, what parts do I need? (I'm looking at the website: www.wholsesalesolar.com for parts to import)
Also, is there a better way of doing this, or do any of these ideas seem unfeasable?
Thanks
Answer: Your system is basically doable.
As to pure sine wave inverters, these do not truly exist. All inverters work by taking the DC voltage from the batteries or other source, and chopping it onto the output lines. This is done with solid state devices such as IGBTs. The smoothness of the output power is determined by how fast the DC level is switched. All inverters put out high frequency harmonics. The general method is to run the output of the inverter through an inductive device such as a transformer, the reactance of which tends to smooth out the switching impulses.
Many home appliances could care less about the noise on the power lines. Some home electronics are sensitive and should be run of inductively isolated circuits. Your phone system is most likely not all that susceptible, it probably has it's own power supply that creates the local voltages. These supplies are usually switchers these days, which are just a variation on an inverter. I would talk with the phone system supplier to determine if there is a problem.
Batteries: I would place all the batteries in a central location, for safety and connivance. As to the number of batteries needed, you will need at least 15 in each bank to give you 160 VDC. This will then come down to the 120 VAC that you will want out of the inverters. The total number of batteries you will need is dependent on the peak instantaneous current demands of your systems. The current draw can be determined by I = E/P where I is the current, E is the voltage, and P is the power. You list 1/2 MegaWatt per home per month, but what usage do you expect at any given moment. The 1/2 Mega Watt per month would only come into play if you intended to run the entire system off batteries for one month, and I'm sure that you don't want to do that. You need to determine how much power you will be supplying at a given time and size your battery array to that usage.
Answer: Tops, EE.
Next, ME
Least attractive, Physics.
Question: Scientist who believe in zeitgeist, I am looking for a project related to automation. Are you willing to help? I am an electrical engineer and I am willing to work for free after work on any project related to automation to help the zeitgeist movement. Any engineer willing to work with me? Can you think of any ideas?
Answer: Yes
