Question: Software Engineering? I'm doing a software engineering degree and I need to know what are the additional qualifications should I obtain. My main programing languages are VB.net and Java. What else should I learn to be a better software engineer.
Answer: Look at the emploment websites and check out the requirements for the kinds of positions that most interest you.
Java is the most common lately. DB's like Oracle or MySQL are common. HTML, javascript, and XML are common, and JSP and/or PHP.
A 4yr degree will get you more consideration and usually higher pay.
The most important consideration for *keeping* good employment is good engineering practices: Good design, yielding efficient , readable (maintainable) code in minimal time.
Good luck.
Question: software engineering? can anybody tell me more about software engineering, am considering it as my major for my bachelor's degree. is the job market for this really good and is it really hard to study .
Answer: You will need to learn multiple operating systems and languages if you want to be able to get more jobs.
Is it difficult? Only if you choose not to study.
Job market is always open and demanding.
Question: What makes software engineering a low stress job and so high paying? I see consistent reports from US News and World Report that Software Engineering is a low stress, high paying job. If this is the case, then what degree can I get to become a software engineer?
Answer: you should get a computer science degree or a software engineering degree the website i have listed tells all about computer software engineers like the job prospects, earnings, nature of work, work environment, etc. and it is from the bureau of labor statistics
Question: What are good colleges for a software engineering degree? I'm a junior in highschool and I'm thinking about getting a degree in software engineering after graduating highschool. Does anybody know of any reputable schools for a software engineering program or actually taken one?
Answer: Relatively few colleges/universities offer pure "Software Engineering". Perhaps the best is Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Other good schools that offer Software Engineering are:
CalPoly—SLO
Rochester Institute of Technology
Milwaukee School of Engineering
Question: How to get a software engineering internship? I am trying to get an internship, in the field of software engineering, lined up for next summer, but I want to get started finding a place to internship at. How should I go about doing this. I have experience in the field, and I am studying computer science at college. Any suggestions or tips would be great. Thanks.
Answer: First, try your college. They probably have two departments geared to finding jobs - one specializes in finding jobs for graduating seniors and alumni and the other will specialize in internships or work-study programs for current students.
If you don't find help through your school, then tackle it like any other job search. Put together your resume, identify the companies in your area that have substantial IT shops, post your resume to their corporate job boards. Through research and networking find the names of the CIO or VP's in their IT department and e-mail your resume to them along with a short cover message explaining your interest in an internship. Many company HR departments have a person who manages their internship program. Call the switchboard and see if they can get you there. If they don't know who the internship person is, ask if you can speak to someone in recruiting. The recruiting admin will 100% know who manages internships, if anyone.
Remember that networking is as valuable a means of getting internship assignments as it is for getting permanent placement jobs. Build and use your network smartly.
Question: What is the difference between Computer Science & Software Engineering ? Ive recently got 5 Uni offers. 2 of them are software engineering courses and the other 3 are computer science. I initially thought they were the same thing but after talking to one of my teachers at six form i found out that they ain't. I personally am more interested with software and want to learn more about that.
Can you please give me a detailed description of what you do for each course and which one you think i should do considering im really interested in software.
Thank you.

Question: How much to charge for freelance software engineering consulting? So I've been working a regular 9-5 since I've finished my degree, but I've been asked on several occasions if I would do some freelance work.
I'd be happy to do the work, but I'm not sure what to charge. It would be for web-related software engineering work (PHP, CSS, XHTML, etc.). What would be a reasonable hourly rate to charge?
This is for a relatively small client (a web development firm).
I have extensive experience with web development, but I am also just out of college.
Answer: Depends on your location, your skill level, and the size of your client. Generally, if you're straight out of college, you're not going to have a lot of references or much in your portfolio--outside of school work--to show a potential client, so you may have trouble getting top dollar.
I'd shoot for around $50/hr starting out. Most people will ask you to make an estimate for a job instead of taking you on hourly. Take the amount of time you think it will require, double it, and multiply times $50--with luck, you'll break even in the end.
As demand for your services grows, you can raise your rates.

Question: software engineering? dear,
what is software engineering? please how can i find a website for it?
thanks
best wishes,
Answer: Here is a link from the US Occupational Outlook Handbook: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos303.htm
and a quote from www.alis.alberta.ca occupational info:
"Software engineers specify, design, develop and evaluate software such as business and engineering applications, databases, process control systems and systems software. This may involve developing re-usable software that can be adapted for more than one application. In some cases, they develop special purpose embedded software for inclusion in computer controlled products such as washing machine controls and automobile engines. Their work involves:
* consulting with system users and analyzing user requirements
* developing design specifications
* developing strategies to assure fault tolerance and system security
* designing software products and user interfaces
* producing software designs
* modifying existing software to correct errors, adapt to new hardware, increase performance or upgrade user interfaces
* testing and validating programs prior to installation
* installing programs and analyzing performance
* maintaining programs once they are in use
* integrating with legacy systems and third party systems.
They also may be responsible for:
* preparing proposals for information systems
* integrating and testing system software and hardware components
* writing product documentation
* providing cost analyses and obtaining quotes from suppliers
* determining system performance standards
* managing software projects
* assisting in the marketing and sale of software
* supervising the work of technical staff.
Software engineers must constantly update their knowledge and skills to keep up with rapid advancements in computer technology. They often work as members of design teams which may include programmers, hardware engineers, technologists, technicians and marketing and manufacturing specialists."

Question: What are the real time scenarios where good software engineering is required the most? I'd like to get a picture of how software engineering is done in real time and about are the opportunities provided to a software engineer by the industry.
Answer: All the time... EVERYWHERE. These days, almost every business in america, with money, can afford to buy a privately made software. With your software, they will be able to block certain types of websites that are irrelevant to the workplace. Thus, they will be able to prevent employees from not being productive. Banks especially need a very special software so their vault access codes will be protected.
Software engineering is also required when working privately. You might be able to fix computers or other machines and charge good money.
Question: What is the best calculator for Software Engineering or Engineering Physics majors? My son needs a new calculator. He is going to the University of Wisconsin Platteville to major in Software Engineering or Engineering Physics? What is the best calculator to buy him for these majors? He currently owns a TI 84+ and loves it, but the keys are beginning to stick and it is having some other problems. What calculator should I buy for him as a surprise for Christmas?
Answer: I would buy a TI-89 because it can do symbolic operations, which can save a lot of time (and frustration) in a lot of classes like fluid dynamics and vector calc.
Once your son gets in, he will probably realize that software such MATLAB is the way to go though. I would still definitely have a TI-89!
Question: How much is the scope of a Software engineering in Dubai? If i have a masters in software engineering, how much will be my average salary if i plan to work in Dubai? Will there be a good scope atleast?

Question: What is difference between software engineering or software design? I am looking at 2 different online programs. One is software engineering the other is called software designing. Is there a difference, is one rated a higher level of expertise? What school has a good reliable online program for these?
Answer: I am student of BSCS in University of Sargodha UOS. According to my knowledge and study untill to my final semester "SE concerns to all systematic procedures, methods to develop a software, manage, manintain a software in which hole project scope, soft project resorces are considers" while soft design just confind to design a software not how it will be work or manage by after its development or design."
Question: What's the difference between Computer Science and Software Engineering? Ok so im currently taking college courses and I am under the impression that Computer Science and Computer Software Engineering is pretty much the same thing as a major. I want to decide on the two so if any one can tell me if there is a real difference and what that difference is I would appreciate it.
Answer: Please ignore the answers that say Computer Science is hardware stuff. It's not.
For your purposes as somebody starting through a computer science program at school, they are close enough to being the same. Computer Science and Software Engineering are closely related. Almost the same thing. Most experienced programmers today use the title "software engineer" rather than programmer.
Why is that? Anybody can pick up a compiler, learn some basic coding from a book, and call themseves a "programmer." I can't tell you how many people I know who wrap HTML tags around some text and call themselves programmers, or how many self-taught "programmers" I've turned down for jobs because they don't understand things like polymorphism or coupling. The title "programmer" doesn't mean a whole lot, so those of us who spend a lot of time studying how to do it right--how to create efficient, easily maintained, and provably correct code--need something else to call ourselves.
The process of using good programming practices to create highly structured or highly object-oriented code is "software engineering." It's all about creating libraries that are easy to re-use, not too interdependent on eachother, and easily scalable. It's about writing code where you have the smallest likelyhood possible for bugs, and where making changes later won't involve rewriting too much of what you did. It goes way beyond programming, and it's what you will be studying in computer science (once you get past the first year or so, at least).
Those of us who use good software principles to produce software are software engineers. Those of us who study these principles just for the sake of studying them and improving them are computer scientists. Both fall under the "computer science" degree at collegest and universities.
Hope this answers your question.
Question: What exactly is computer software engineering? I'm thinking about computer software engineering as a major in college and I'm just wondering what it is exactly? Does it only have to do with computer (as in a physical computer.. pc/mac etc.) specific programs or is it a little bit more broad than that and go into other electronic devices other than computers? Is there a difference between computer software engineering and just software engineering?
Any details on this field would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: "Computer software engineers are one of the occupations projected to grow the fastest and add the most new jobs over the 2006-16 decade.
Excellent job prospects are expected for applicants with at least bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or computer science and with practical work experience.
Computer software engineers must continually strive to acquire new skills in conjunction with the rapid changes that occur in computer technology.
NATURE OF THE WORK:
Computer software engineers apply the principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to the design, development, testing, and evaluation of the software and systems that make computers work. The tasks performed by these workers evolve quickly, reflecting new areas of specialization or changes in technology, as well as the preferences and practices of employers."

Question: Is the software engineering field good in your opinion? Money magazine, salary.com, and this one book talking about the best low-stressed jobs ranked software engineering quite high.
Do you believe it, or do you think its all bullshit?
Answer: It's a great job, and relatively safe from recession too. People will always need computer and software engineers.
Question: What are the requirements for doing software engineering? i am studying in class +2 with commerce stream and i want to do Software Engineering.what should i take after +2.which are the best options .plz plz suggest.Thank You.
Answer: First of all, +2 with commerce stream and doing Software Engineering through B.tech is odd because mostly we have PCM/B group in engineering entrance exams.
But still if you wanna have it with software engg., try out some private institutes where you don't really need to be worried about commerce.....all you need is to have some fair knowledge about Computers and programming! (must have done HTML in X, similar sort of)
we do have a lot of Networking and IT training Institutes in India, like NIIT's......
Try figure out something lyk that!
Question: What will be the scope of software engineering after 6 years from now? If the scope of software engineering is not so good, then I would appreciate it if you could provide me with suitable alternatives in the computer field. Thanks!
P.S. I am looking for jobs with really high pay in the computer field.
Answer: There is a lot of money in database software, things like SQL and the like. (You can tell i don't know much about it).
Also I think maybe "cloud" computing might come to the fore. Especially server apps. for 3g mobile phones.
Surely traditional apps loaded onto stand-alone PCs etc will be a thing of the past in a few years time?
Question: What are the various courses/degrees in software engineering? Want to know about what one can do in software engineering or what are the various degrees in it.
Answer: MCA, BCA, CCNA, MCSE, MCSC, JAVA BUILDERS, o' LEVEL & SO MANY
Question: How hard is the field of Computer Software Engineering? Where should I start? I'm almost 15, bad at math, good at every other subject, B average and A's if I really work hard at it. I'm on the computer most of my day playing FPS's and I'm interested in coding. Is it hard to code in C++ or C# or HTML. How hard is the field of computer software engineering? How realistic would it be for me to start learning about coding at the age of 15? Is coding hard? Where should I start also and does the career require math?
Answer: The only mark you have against you is your math skills. Programming is almost all logic and syntax so being good in math is a real plus. You are not to young to start. Bill Gates was a hack in his teens. There are numerous tutorials on the web that you can download for free along with the programming language. You might want to start with PERL since it won't cost you any money and will run on your PC. It is somewhat a kin to C in its syntax, (style).
As for how hard it is, only you can answer that. Just take a shot, it's free!
Question: What are some career options for someone with a degree in software engineering technology? I'm starting school at Oregon Institute of Technology and planning on majoring in software engineering technology. I would love to get a good job once I'm done with school. I'd like to maybe get into the law enforcement field (every police agency needs a good computer nerd) but is that realistic? What sort of things might I be able to do?
Answer: If you are good at software engineering - Microsoft needs them to fix all the multiple flaws in their operating systems...... all the back doors the hackers use to create misery. You will have a lifetime job guaranteed!
Question: What a level subjects woul be helpful for me if i wanted to do software engineering in the future? What a level subjects would be helpful for me if i wanted to do software engineering in the future?
i am confused about what subjects to choose...i want to do software engineering in the future. can you please help me out.
Thank you.
Answer: Science with Maths and English are must for Computer Engineering. Physics in particular.
Question: How much math is required to become a software engineering? I am a senior in high school and am thinking about going into software engineering next year. I'm hesitant about going into it because I am weak in math. Throughout high school, my math hasn't been too strong. Should I let this discourage me? if not, why not?
Answer: Without math, how are you going to solve the problems you are supposed to solve by programming a computer? You often need to calculate the derivative, or display the slope, or plot the acceleration of something, and without the math background how can you do it?
You may not be weak in math. You may have gone to a public school where you were taught poorly by the dregs of some college program who settled on teaching because no one else would hire them. They are the reason you are weak in math.
Colleges have a lot of remedial programs where you can learn to excel in math. But really, if you are poor in math you have few choices in life. One is to be a government public school math teacher...
Question: What is the combination of Biotech&software engineering? Do you people who work in this field travel during the work, such as seminars, conferences, meeting clients.....? I am planning to do a MSc Software engineering will this help me in getting into the software side and will i be able to get a chance to travel frequently since to be honest that is what i am looking for.
Thankyou
Answer: If you are looking for a job with travel then software engineering is not for you. Most software engineers spend their time in a 6x6 cubicle.
Question: What is the future of software engineering in the world? Are we living in a software dark age? 50 years ago, there was nothing called "software". What about 50 years later? And what about near future? Is there goign to be a revolution in software engineering?
Answer: Maybe somewhere they are making progress but not where I work. I keep looking for that major breakthru and all I see is the repackaging of the same ideas under a different name.
Interestingly, there a web site called The Future of Software Engineering. It "presents a summary of the state-of-the-art in each of the key areas of software engineering presented by leading researchers. In each field a "roadmap" setting out the key challenges facing software engineers is presented alongside an outline of the ways in which such challenges might be met."
Question: Is 58k a good starting salary for embedded software engineering in Fort Lauderdale, FL? I am a recent Computer Engineering Graduate and I am being offered an embedded software development position in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It's a contract position paying $28.00/hr. Is this is a reasonable payrate? I have about 1 year of experience doing software development at Lockheed as an intern.
Answer: for the amount of experience you have its a very good pay rate for now
Question: What's the difference between a Software Engineering degree and a Computer Programming Degree? Eventually I would like to program games for a living (I know it's cliché). I've been looking at lists of BAs for certain colleges and haven't decided quite what I'm looking for. Very few schools have an accredited Game Design/Game Development/Game Programming BA (Go Santa Cruz!), but many have both Computer Programming and Software Engineering degrees. What's the difference between the two? Is Computer Science a good alternative?
Answer: I've always thought it to just be a different name for the same thing.
Software Engineer makes you sound more impressive though. Kinda like being a "Waste disposal manager" as opposed to "garbage man". I have worked as a programmer for a long time. With one of my employers, my contract also listed me as "Software Engineer", but the job was exactly the same as the "Programmer" ones.
The difference should be listed in the descriptions of the specific studies.
I'm quite curious myself tbh. Could you list a school that has both of them?
Question: What should i do web designing or software engineering? Hi,
my name is sahil verma. I m an average person earning 5000 per month. Recently i hv cleared my b.a finals now i want to do something in the field of computers. I have to choices, web designing and software engineering. What should i do which suites my qualification and from which i can earn more than my present earning in future.
Answer: Hi friend,
You have done b.a. final but that does not help you in web designing & software engineering. Both field is totally different from ur graduation degree in arts.
For ur information, I want to say that web designing is a creative field. Creative field means you have to make a web layout, what colors to use to suit ur website, what font u will use, how too interact with maximum user so that user will use ur website & thats the motive of making a website.
As far as software engineering is concerned, it is a totally different field.. Software engineering is all about writing programs & making a proper software. This is totally a field of logic. Ex: If u want to calculate the addition of first 100 numbers then how can you do that ??
This is just a simple problem but yes, software engineering is just like solving any problem.
Now, as per earning in these field goes....in Indian industry scenario, a fresher web-designer will get around Rs. 5000-8000 as their first salary but in software engineering, it starts from Rs. 10,000 , sumtime 15,000 & sumtime 20,000 as per your skill & talent.
By the way, just doing a course is not important, its all about gaining skill & doing hardwork as the only secret of getting success is hardwork...
Question: what is the differences between computer science and software engineering and information system? Many students interested in the information technology area at a degree or diploma level have to choose between doing information systems, computer science and software engineering. What are the major differences between the different types of courses? Identify some subjects or subject areas an information systems student might cover that the others would not cover.
Answer: Computer Science is the broad term that generally covers everything. Like the previous poster writes, computer science covers software and hardware engineering.
Software engineering is the design and development of software. These are basically programs. You will need to take a lot of programming classes. This may include lower level languages such as machine language as well. Higher level languages such as C and C++ and their applications and implementation is a must. Structures, classes, functions, scripting, and other languages might be involved.
IT is information technology and is the common name for Information systems. Some schools have different names for the same thing or have different variations of IT. MIS, IS, IT, NIT are just some of the few acronyms found as majors. Management Information Systems, Information Systems, Information Technology, Networking Information Technology etc. These courses usually deal with setting up a computer, installing software, making sure networks are operating properly, solving network problems, and involve a small bit of coding. There are a lot of vocational and technical schools that offer certification with certain systems and software that deal with Information Systems. IS people are not considered engineers. There are a variety of operating systems to understand such as Windows, Linux, Sun OS, Unix etc.
There are other specialties like web design, hardware etc. Many classes overlap and students in IS will learn a bit of each depending on the institute of study. Programming that IS might cover is database programming, storage and manipulation. SAP is a popular code.
It all depends on the classes the student decides to take within the required scope of getting their degree.
Question: Is it possible to transfer to a Masters in Software Engineering? Currently, I am studying BSc Multimedia Computing and have just completed my 1st year. If I complete the degree course with good grades is it possible for me to take an MSc course in Software Engineering at a reputable university?
Answer: Don't see why not.
Question: Should I study computer science or software engineering? I'm a linguistics major, and I'm going to add a minor/double major in computer science or software engineering so that I can get my Masters in computational linguistics. Which should I choose and why?
Answer: Go for Computer science.
Software engineering is all about software project management, this you can learn on the job later where as Computer science will give you knowledge to work on computational linguistics.
Question: Will a BMath help in finding a job in software engineering with a BIT? I'm considering studying a dual degree, a Bachelor of Information Technology/Bachelor of Mathematics. I'll be majoring in Software Engineering. I'm just asking, will the Mathematics degree help in finding a job as a software engineer? If not, it's probably not worth doing.
Logic says that it should, so please only respond if you're in the industry or have applicable knowledge.
Answer: I don't know much about the industry, but you can check out www.dol.gov and look under the Occupational Outlook Handbook. This will give you answers to your questions. I wish you Good Luck and Peace.
Question: Do you have to have a engineering degree to be a software engineer? i am entering college in a year and my career choice is a computer systems software engineer. but the problem is, the college that ive been wanting to attend for ages doesn't have an engineering program. could i still get a (good) software engineering job with a degree in:
1-Computer Science
2-Computer Information Systems
3-Computer Information Science
4-Information Technology
if you know of any other degrees that hiring managers hire software engineers with, please let me know
all of your input is greatly appreciated, Thank-You!
Answer: No, you don't have to be an "engineer" to be a software engineer. You would do fine with majoring in the areas you list. What would matter is what you learn, not what your sheepskin says.
Question: Is Physics much important in Software engineering? I am a science student and also do computer studies. Actually I'm looking forward to be one day in the field of engineering, more exactly software engineering but I'm not too good in Physics. That's why I wanna know if it is important to be good at Physics to become a software engineer. What are the other skills required in this field? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Answer: I m also a science student you do not need to know anything about physics for computers i have done many computer courses including c,c++,sql database, algorithms, and basic information of software and hardware of computer but in all of these i do not use physics but you should be somewhat good in mathematics because it is used much in computer programming
Question: Wondering what level of math is necessary for software engineering? I really like the idea of being a software engineer. I have a lot of ideas and ambition. I've been studying as hard as I can, and haven't been able to make past a C level grade on calculus, and I'm only on the second part of a series of courses. I don't know if I'm taking too much of a load, or if I'm just not good at this. Is math really all that important to software engineering? I make good grades in everything else.
Answer: Engineering of any type is actually applied math. So math is very important. If you can get a C level grade, maybe you are just overwhelmed and need to repeat the math courses so far. Can you take less of a load, or take the math by itself maybe during a summer?
You're making good grades in everything else, so retaking the calculus is worth finding out that you can do this, or if you need to find something else as a career. Making good grades in everything else, being ambitious, and having a C level in math sounds like a person who has more than one career option out there.
Question: Can you start with computer science and go into software engineering? So can you continue into software engineering after getting associates degree in computer science?
Answer: I think that to be a good software engineer you need to go through computer science first.
Def:
"Software engineering is the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software, and the study of these approaches; that is, the application of engineering to software"
Question: What are the challenges facing during the development process in software engineering ? What are the challenges facing during the development process in software engineering besides legacy, heterogeneity and delivery?

Question: How to get experience in Computer Software Engineering? So, I am a junior in high school taking a program called running start where I go to a community college. I was looking into computer software engineering and every website I went on said that employers will hire you if you have some experience in the field. How can I get that 'experience'? If you could, please explain everything about the job. (: Thank youu
Answer: The age old question, how to get a job to gain experience when all the jobs require experience.
Start with your Computer Science degree. As part of that, one track should take you into software design and engineering. After getting your degree you start with a entry level job in software development in a company that has a career path into the CS Engineering group. You will not start out as a Software Engineer.
Your counselor at the community college should be able to help you lay out the course plan to get your Computer Science degree specializing in Software Engineering.
Question: At the age of 52, should I go back to college to study software engineering? I currently live on disability compensation and wonder whether my life experience would improve if I were to return to the university with the intention of working in the software engineering field from the age of 55 to 75. I am a convicted felon (a drug offense) and am schizophrenic. I have two degrees but very little professional experience. My income is between $25,000 and $30,000. I live comfortably alone in an apartment complex and enjoy learning about computers. Should I be content with my disability compensation and pursue computer science as a hobby or plunge in, go back to school, reenter the world of work, and pursue a profession?
Answer: It really depends on alot of factors. If you are comfortable where you are right now, I would just buy a few books or take a few classes. But if this is truely your lifes passion, then I say go for it.
Question: Where is a good source to get experience in software engineering? Is there anywhere online that I can go in order to learn about and gain experience in the area of software engineering? It seems interesting, and a good online resource (not necessarily a programming tutorial, because I can easily understand that) would really help.
I've also heard about the open source community. What would be a good project in order to build skills in software engineering? Thanks!
Answer: That would depend on what education you have. If you have a degree, what you need is a job. If you don't have a degree, your first option should be to get one. If that absolutely is precluded, then the Open Source community is your only option and you'd better hit the ground running with something fairly sizable to gain a reputation. Of course, this is my opinion and that is given free and darn well worth it. Good luck. Pivy.
