Question: computer engineering? I am not interested in computer engineering but I have done my two semesters. I am more interested in MIS(management information system). Do you guys suggest me to drop my computer engineering field and pursue that field where I have my personal interest.
Thanks.
Answer: In general, I would always say yes. Much better to work in a field you find interesting. Much better to stop now, than to continue in a field you not interested and then some day down the road wish you made a change.
Just don't make it a habit of changing major every year or you will never graduate.
Question: Computer engineering? Computer engineering?
is it better to major in electrical then pick up ce in the master phase?
Answer: I would go for the EE and a good grounding on the fundamentals. Computer technology is then more easily understood and picked up. Furthermore it rapidly changes with time & much of today's learning can be obsolete tomorrow.
Question: Is the course work of electrical engineering and computer engineering almost same? Is the course work of electrical engineering and computer engineering almost same?
I mean like the classes one should take in electrical engineering and computer engineering are same?
And what is the difference between computer science and computer engineering?
Is it just like computer science is software and computer engineering is hardware or something else?
Answer: for your first question , the answer is NO .
the course work is the same for all branches of engineering for the 1st semester . during second sem , there would be a couple of common subjects . after 3rd sem , there would be almost no common subjects (except electives . and , some subjects like Digital Signal Processing . ) .
electrical engg has subjects related to electricity , electronics , control systems ,etc .
computer egg has subjects mainly related to hardware and software .
you can see that there is no similarity .
As for computer science and computer engg, the former is a science course and the latter is an engineering course . Both have hardware and software , but the approach varies . engineering courses can fetch you a job rather easily . science courses are mainly for those interested in research .
Question: Should I major in computer engineering if the program is not accredited? How important is accreditation? The university that I currently attend offers Electrical and Computer Engineering and the programs are very similar except for a few different courses. I am in my sophomore year and I changed my major from computer science to EE. I was thinking I would Major in EE and minor in CS, but my advisor feels I should just major in Comp Engineering since I already have a little knowledge. However, the CE program is relatively new so it's not accredited as of yet. I really changed my major because I didn't want to limit myself to computers. But my advisor says the same jobs an EE can get a CE can get. How true is this? And what should I do major in Electrical Eng and Minor in Computer Science or should I just major in Comp. Eng.
Answer: If you want to go to some really high rated grad school it is important. As long as your school has ABET accredited engineering programs, the individual department accreditation is not that important. The most important thing is passing the PE when your done. But major in EE because its in demand. With EE you can still be a computer engineer anyway.
Question: What Classes should I take for computer engineering? I want to major in computer engineering and the like in college. I'm planning to apply to a couple ivy schools. I want to build/design computer parts and electronics themselves.
What sorts of classes should I focus on? I'm going to the 11th grade in September. There aren't any computer specific classes but I was wondering what colleges like to see if one is going for computer engineering.
Answer: Go heavy on the math and physics. You will need the physics as a basis for understanding the hardware aspects, and the math for the software aspects. Computer engineering is all about figuring out the best combination of hardware and software for a particular job. If your school offers it, try to take a programming course, but if you can't you aren't necessarily at a disadvantage. Also, try to take a statistics course--it wasn't emphasized in my curriculum, but it pays of in the long run.
Finally, don't worry too much about getting into an Ivy--companies hire more based on GPA and projects. I got my job based mostly on my senior project and my Master's thesis.
Question: What computer engineering jobs use the most math? I've been reading a lot about engineering jobs and was surprised to find that there's very little calculus being used in many of them. I like advanced math and I'm heading to engineering college next year (after I complete my prerequisites at a 2-year college) and was wondering what sort of jobs for computer science & engineering grads use a lot of math? I'm interested in working on anything really high-tech. Anything to do with physics simulations or graphics, or cutting edge IC design.
Answer: IC design, i'm not aware of too much
civil / structural design - iwe use a lot of mathematics be it calculus or matrices or integrals etc.
Question: What are good Canadian universities for a computer engineering / computer science masters degree ? I'm a computer engineering graduate who is planning on pursuing a masters degree in Canada. I was wondering what Canadian universities that are good in the computer science / computer engineering field ?
Answer: the University of Waterloo in Waterloo Ontario Canada has one of the best computer programs in the world. Bill Gates has visited the university several times, top students are recruited by major companies right after graduation, and they have a Co-Op program giving their students a leg up over kids from other schools. (if your grades are good the Co-ops can be amazing i knew a kid IMB flew to Florida to work for them for four months and they were paying him like king!). There are a ton of international students at Waterloo and both their computer science and computer engineering programs are the best in North America. It is a VERY competitive school the programs are hard and really hard to get into, but if your grades are good go for it!
Question: What are the different fields of computer engineering? I am just finishing my first semester of college at a junior college and I am trying to figure out what I should be doing in order to continue to a 4-year school in computer engineering. I would just like some info related to the job of computer engineering and the fields of it.
Answer: You can do hardware with Computer Hardware Engineering or Electronics Engineering. Hardware is basically all the physical/tangible stuff (processors, video cards, motherboards, etc.).
You could also do software with Software Engineering or Computer Science. Software is the nontangibles that runs the computers (Windows, Java, HTML, C++, etc.)
As far as I know, that's about it.
Question: What is the difference between a computer engineering major and computer science major? What is the difference between a computer engineering major and computer science major?
Answer: Computer engineers have to go through a lot more hardware oriented classes and learn about circuits, digital signal processing, etc. CompE's also have to go through thermodynamics courses and other *well-rounding* courses. Computer science majors don't nearly have those many extra requirements -- they mainly go through software programming classes, although many hardware classes are offered. Specific courses required may differ from school to school, but the general requirements are the same.
Question: What is the difference between 'Computer engineering and Computer Systems engineering'? What is the difference between 'Computer engineering and Computer Systems engineering'?
Those who study either- Do they study different subjects at university? Do they get the same jobs?
Answer: Computer engineering basically includes software engineering in which the task delivered is to design softwares .Whereas on the other hand Computer systems engineering means the hardware engineering which includes processor engine.
Question: What is the difference between Computer Engineering and Computer Science? I'm a freshman in college and I was planning on majoring in Computer Engineering, but unfortunately it doesn't really seem too interesting to me, especially all the computer programming. I'm considering changing my major to Computer Science except I don't really know what kind of career a degree in Computer Science will get me. So what is the difference between the two? Please help me out, I don't really have too much time to ask the advisers at my university, so any help would be appreciated.
Answer: Computer science will be more computer programming oriented than computer engineering. You will have to program in both, quite a bit actually, but in computer engineering you will do quite a bit on the hardware side of things -- learning about computer architecture, embedded systems, circuit design, etc.
One thing that you should note: For the first year and a half these two majors are virtually indistinguishable (also can include Electrical Engineering in this). You will take the same math, science, and computer programming classes. After the first year and half things will change, but this can give you some time to gather more information and decide what will work best for you.
Question: How secure is a career in computer engineering in the next six years? Not graphics designing but actual engineering.
Lately Ive been seeing these stories of guys with large mechanics degree's earning 120,000 a year ending up working at Lowe's for 12 an hour. I don't want to end up like that and my parents have always told me that the future is based on computers and people with a high knowledge of them will be sought after.
Also I know Computer Engineering is a sub field full of many fields so what are they?
Answer: It should be reasonably secure. Even if PC's all turn into iPads, engineers will still be needed.
The reason the $120,000 are working at Lowe's is because no one expected so many businesses to close so quickly. The banking sector had massive layoffs. No one knows if computers will be next or if the good times will return.
Question: How important is ABET accreditation for a Computer Engineering Degree? I am a student enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCE) program with an emphasis on software (what they call Computer Engineering Software Track or Computer Software Engineering). According to the university the program does not have, as of now, ABET accreditation, but they say they are working towards obtaining it. Is that a bad thing? How important is ABET accreditation for computer engineers?
Answer: ABET accreditation of Computer Engineering degrees is crucial. A CE degree would have no credibility without this accreditation, and in most states a graduate of such a degree would not be allowed to take the Professional Engineer exams.
CAC/ABET accreditation of Computer *Science* and related degrees is relatively recent, because for years there was professional rivalry between competing Professional Societies. No the accreditation criteria are settled, and most good Computing degree schools are accredited now or will be shortly. There are, however, several very prominent holdouts who show no intention of getting accreditation.
Question: What is the difference between Computer Engineering and Information Technology? Hii everybody, i am a student who is going to join an engineering college this year. But i would like to know what is the difference between Computer Engineering and Information Technology? Which course has a lot of programming? Which one is recommendable?
P.S. Also i would like to know the syllabus.
Greatly appreciate your help. Thank You!
Answer: At most schools, a Computer Engineering program will pertain to computer hardware; while an Information Technology program will pertain to computer software. Information Technology is likely to require more programming, though there will be programming in both courses of study.
Question: What are the common mathematics questions in computer engineering during the interview in university? I well be going to college now and I am going to took computer engineering but before I can study in WMSU I must face the blackboard with a mathematics questions (interview).I am not a math person..i hate math..give me some problems and answers of mathematics questions..please help me. I really want to took computer engineering.. its not easy but ill do my best to answer all the questions during the interview...is the a big problem?wish me lock!
Answer: Simple algebra and calculus of course. You need to master this calculus to be able to cope up with numerical methods.
Question: How to decide on a Computer Engineering Degree or IT Degree? What is the difference between a computer engineering degree and a IT or computer science degree?
I know the Engineering degree takes 4 years and computer science is 3 years?
Is there a big advantage in doing the a computer engineering degree as opposed to a general IT or computer science degree?
Which degree will give me better job prospects and money?
Answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_engineering
http://blogs.payscale.com/ask_dr_salary/2008/01/jobs-for-comput.html
http://www.naceweb.org/press/display.asp?year=2008&prid=286
I would decide based on what you enjoy most. Do you like programming (computer science) or dealing with hardware/electrical engineering (computer engineering)?
Question: What are some top computer engineering colleges on the east coast of America? I'm looking to major in computer engineering and i want to know which colleges are known for that major. I'm not looking at Ivy League schools because i'm not Einstein, i just want to know some good schools that are known for computer engineering.
Answer: Johns Hopkins and Brown probably have the best pure "Computer Engineering" degree programs.
MIT and Franklin Olin probably have the best "Computer Science & Engineering" degree programs.
But your question is about "good" schools (not "Ivy League"), so I recommend:
George Mason U
Rensselaer Polytechnic
Rochester Institute of Technology
(RIT has both Computer Engineering & Computer Engineering Technology)
Tufts U
Union College
Virginia Polytechnic
A brave choice would be Capitol College. Not large or renowned, but with small classes and individual attention.
Question: What is the difference between computer engineering and EECS majors? Is one better than the other? I'd like to go to UC Berkeley, but they don't offer computer engineering as a major like UC Davis or Cal State Poly. UCB does offer EECS.
Answer: First of all congrats if you get accepted to Berkeley. EECS and CompEng is the same thing. Some people mistake software engineering with computer engineering.
Computer engineering is a combination of computer science and EE. Electronics Engineering is also very close to computer engineering. It may also be referred to computer hardware engineering.
Look at it as a specialization under Electrical Egineering. You will also have choices of what type of COmpEng you want to specialize in. Computer architecutre and operating systems, VLSI and advanced digital design, Ebedded systems design
By the way. This has nothing to do with IT like they guy above is talking about. You'll be studying physics of circuits, rather than cat5 connection and WAN technologies.
To answer your question in one word. No, there's not much difference. Just read the curriculum for both programs.
Question: What colleges are good for computer engineering around southern California? What colleges are good for computer engineering around southern California? I want to go to a cal state or UC.
Answer: University of California, Irvine
UCLA
Cal State Polytechnic Pomona
These are usually the good schools that are esteemed in engineering in Southern California for UC and Cal State
I would suggest USC too, if you are interested, but its a private school
Question: What are social controversies surrounding computer engineering? I need to give a persuasive speech in my speech class relating to my major. It needs to be on a social or political controversy and we must pick a side. I am having trouble coming up with a good topic relating to my major(computer engineering) I thought of maybe technology going to far but that might not be specific enough. If you have any suggestions or ideas please let me know. Thanks in advance!
Answer: Social Controversies. One of the biggest SOCIAL issues I have noticed over the years, is people who got involved in computers when I did, were all geeks. now days, that is not true at all. Maybe you should write on this.
I have 20 years of professional experience working with computers and 30 years of personal experience. I have been a programmer, network engineer, Black hat, White hat, and now a computer hacker forensics investigator.
Back in the 70's when I first got involved with computers, the stereo type was nerds who knew computers, but had no social skills or sport abilities. pocket protectors, glasses, floods. etc. etc. On the most part, it was true. Over time however that changed.
In the 80's it was more long hair, jeans and T-shirts with holes in them, video games, Pizza, minimal sports activities (Think of "War Games").
In the 90's that is all completely different. Network engineering is a huge market with a lot os specialties. Network engineers such as myself have no problems interacting with other people, I personally am very active in sports (Karate, White water rafting, Paintball, SCUBA diving, Shooting, 4 wheeling, etc. etc.). The early nerds were often picked on, but now, if someone messes with us, we may very well kick some ass. It has become a very mainstream job, and heavily sought after.
Now, in the early 21st century it is changing even more. There is on the most part a world war taking place in Cyberspace, and those who work in my field are beginning to take on a Warrior personna. A soldier protecting our way of life and capable of acting on their own, in the best interest of us all. Although, most people do not yet have a clue about this level yet.
Question: What school has the best computer engineering program in Florida? Which one has an accelarated program to get a Masters and a Bachelors in 5 yrs, as a major and a minor, respectively? How does its computer engineering program rank among the nation?
Answer: Florida is not a state with renowned Schools of Engineering. Embry-Riddle and U of Florida might be the best of a mediocre bunch for Computer Engineering.
Question: What courses do you recommend for a computer engineering student? I'm a computer engineering student; I finished two years and have three more left. I'm planning on taking courses in aspects related to the computer field. The type of courses are courses taken in a training center. What type of courses do you think would help me in my major? I'm thinking of Microsoft.net(Visual Studio), Oracle Developer (database), MCSE, and other network courses. Am I following the right way? What courses would you recommend I take, so that I'm highly skilled by time I graduate?
Answer: You might consider the following (not necessarily all!):
CCNA to CCNP
MCTS
MCITP
Network +
Linux +
Security +
The MCSE is no longer offered but the certification is still valid. Networking security is becoming more and more important in the IT world and will only continue to grow.
Question: What is the difference between computer engineering and software engineering? im in high school and im confused which one i want to take
computer engineering or software engineering.
what are their differences?
which one is better?
what classes would i need?
What is the best college for either one?
Answer: Computer engineering deals with the hardware of a computer. Software engineering, also known as computer science, deals with the software, or programming, side of computers.
Neither is really "better". It just depends on whether you'd rather be designing new hardware, or designing new software.
With computer engineering (CE), you'll be taking a lot of electrical engineering classes and technical courses. With computer science (CS), it'll involve programing languages and syntax. If you do choose CS, be prepared to learn a lot of new languages, since there are a great many ways to code a program.
Question: What can you do with a computer engineering degree? I'm at the university of arizona and i'm majoring in computer engineering. I choice this major because I would like to work for a company like Sony, Microsoft, or Apple. I've been thinking about it and i would love to be involved with video games. Not actually coming up with the story/ characters and stuff, but the hardware that the designers need to make great games like Uncharted 1 2, Arkam, Dragon age, Red Dead etc. Is this a realistic goal that corresponds with the degree i am working toward?
Answer: If you have a degree - or any extra qualification - then you'll already be in advace of of the crowd when it comes to searching for vocations. My friend has a degree and he wasn't certain what direction to go with it, but he uncovered some good instruction on the site in the resource box below which guided him to decide that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is lots of help on the site regarding extra vocations.
Question: What's the highest paying job with computer science and computer engineering? I a going to major in computer science and computer engineering as a double major. What is the highest paying job I can get?
If I won't make much money doing those, then what computer course should I major in? I want to learn all about computers. I want to make like at least 100,000 dollars.
Answer: The highest paying jobs are in corporate sales. Take some business courses with your degree and then after you have about 4-5 years experience, transfer into the organization's sales department.
Question: How good is majoring in Computer Engineering? Please, tell me how good Computer Engineering is, in terms of starting salaries, demand, etc. If possible, please rate it on a scale of 1 - 10, and PLEASE don't tell me I should go for what am naturally good at, talent, bla bla, cos am excellent with computers and my mind is made up.
Please, also compare it with Computer science and IT. Thanks.
Answer: Computer Engineering in my mind would rate a 9. (Doctor being a 10). If you take a look on Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com you will find MANY jobs out there that a computer engineering(CE) background can accomplish. In my mind a CE is a jack of all trades kinda. For instance CE's can do programming jobs, hardware jobs, IT jobs, etc.
As for salary it ranges. I believe entry level salary average for CE is around 59k/yr starting and then blooms from there. I have seen CE jobs asking for 5yr experience offering 100-160k/yr salary. I personally am a recent grad of CE and in my graduating class ALL CE majors found jobs BEFORE graduation or were accepted into grad school.
Now comparitive to computer science(CS) or IT... CS is mostly, 95% of the time programming. They make roughly the same amount of money starting, maybe a little less, but the future outlook for them is still great. However you will not be doing anything hardware related. So no circuits or chip design. IT is fixing computers. They do some programming but not much. I have good friends in all 3 areas IT, CS and CE.
The one in IT is fixing computers and finding problems in networks and solving them. They make a great starting salary but your pay wont move much from there. Because there is little to learn about fixing a machine once you know it...
As for CS and CE they are doing different jobs either gov. or contractor. Both making good money. The reason for CE and CS salaries to increase more then IT is because they are constantly learnign new things and new software. For example in CE you are design and researching the newest and greatest chip.
I believe that as a CS you can program and maybe do something else... As IT you will do little programming and fix computers and problems. However as CE you will be able to do all of that PLUS do some work as a an electrical engineer(EE). For instance, I had a co-op as an EE, and now working in an CS based job. I can do both things which is what I love about CE. I hope this helps some and if you need more info just message me.
Question: What state have the highest paying average Computer Engineering job? What US state have the highest paying average Computer Engineering job? Please, give me a weblink along with your answer.
Answer: You might try the website Salary.com You can put in a job title and a state and it will come up with some examples. Good luck.
Question: What are the best colleges/universities for computer engineering and computer science in california? I'm a 10th grader and I'm interested in computer engineering and computer science in college. Are there any good colleges/universities in California that are very good in the computer field? Can you list them from best to worst?
I prefer southern California, but northern is fine.
Answer: There are too many to list.
There's no point in listing the top ten unless your GPA and SAT scores are near-perfect.
Question: How hard is computer science compared to other engineering majors? Here's a list of them:
-Aerospace Engineering
-Architectural Engineering
-Bioengineering
-Chemical Engineering
-Civil Engineering
-Computer Engineering
-Computer Science
-Electrical Engineering
-Environmental Engineering
-Industrial Engineering
-Manufacturing Engineering
-Materials Engineering
-Mechanical Engineering
-Nuclear Engineering
-Software Engineering
How does computer science rank in terms of difficulty?
Answer: it's not that hard buddy but if ur good at software and programming just go 4 it , but if ur good at hardware u should go to computer eng. , and 4 me I like the motors and these stuffs so I joined the mechanical eng. think twice bro befor chooseing .thanx
Question: Where can you work if you have studied computer engineering ? I am a 15 year-old student thinking about studying computer engineering ,I only wanted to know where I could work or with which company I could work .And can I work with microsoft or not ?
Answer: You can work in many companies, depending on your sub-discipline. By that I mean as a Computer Engineer, you can go into sub-disciplines such as Signals and Systems, Control, Microprocessor, Digital Logic and etc. Some companies will hire you just based on your sub-discipline itself, so in the end, you have to research that yourself.
As for working with Microsoft, you can work there as a Hardware Development Engineer or their Consultant. But most of Microsoft's Software and Hardware Development positions are open to graduates with a Computer Science degree.
Question: Is AP Computer Science a great course to major in computer engineering? I am currently a junior in high school and will be planning to an AP class next semester, but which course will help more in majoring in computer engineering? Do all AP classes have the same effect or power that colleges look forward to? Thanks!
Answer: AP Classes help one place out of lower level college classes and they are not necessarily a good predictor of success in computer engineering.
Question: What are prospects in public sector for a computer engineering student? I am a final year student of computer science engineering and want to know what are the possibilities in the public sector. I am open to both types of jobs either technical or non- technical.
I particularly want to know about opportunities in government organisations in India.
Answer: lots in programming, but very few in hardware
Question: What is the best university for computer engineering? I am presently in my first year of university in Moncton, NB, Canada.I plan on transferring to another university that can offer computer engineering. I would prefer a french university, but let's face it, french is not the most useful language when dealing with computers!
What would be the best Canadian universities with this program?
I hear Waterloo is one of the best, but I'd really like to look at my options!
Thank you
Answer: Waterloo is really the best (co-op programs). Other less, trys UofT , queens, or Ottawa. But they're rather competitive, so i say GOOD LUCK!

Question: What university is the best in the world for computer engineering? Please, I need to know witch one is the best in the world for computer/technology engineering. 10 points for a good answer!
Answer: Hands down: Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Question: How about computer engineering at Ryerson University? I am an Indian student currently studying in class 12th. I want to opt for computer engineering at Ryerson next year fall(September 2011). Is it good to study there? What are the grade requirements for an Indian student? When should I apply and how? Is there any scholarship program? Does the university conduct any separate exam for admission? How many Indian students get admission there? Thanks for your precious time.
Answer: - Yes, very good engineering and science programs at Ryerson
- Google the grade requirements at the Ryerson website.
- Apply as soon as possible if you want to get in for September 2010, or January 2010.
- They have scholarships, but you need to apply for these as well.
- There will be a language profiency exam to make sure you know english.
- LOTS of indian students my friend. LOTS. All of the engineering programs are indian students. You'll feel very welcome! :)
GOOD LUCK!
Question: What are the education requirements specifically for Waterloo's computer engineering? I've seen on their website that physics and such irrelevant seeming courses need to be taken. It's too late for me to grab another course at my high school this late in the year (I also don't have any space left for it), so I'm wondering if all those extras are really needed or if only math and computer engineering/science are needed.
It'd be nice if you can give me a list. Thankyou!
Answer: Well I guess first I should say, the entrance requirements listed on their site are like god, if you don't have those you will not be direct accepted into the program (maybe an alternative but it is unlikely engineering).
Physics is definitely not irrelevant. All the maths are important, as is physics, and I would take chem as well (if your already not required to). In all honesty high school level computer engineering courses are a waste of your time for the most part. I think the only good computer classes I took was for my CCNA. Most things that you learn in those classes you could teach to yourself in a rather short period of time. You will use the physics skills in your uni level physics courses (to some degree), entry level statics, etc etc. It is always very useful to have.
My suggestion would be take night school or remove one of your courses next term and take it instead (if possible).
Question: What are the subjects to get an associates in computer engineering? What are the subjects I need to take to get an associates in computer engineering? I'm just a highschool graduate. Wondering if I could clep out all the subjects of computer engineering. If not all, then what are the subjects that I could clep out. Plus if you have an A+ certificate would it transcribe for credits? I would appreciate your help
Answer: edit: Sorry. Clicked on wrong question, lol.
Question: what is the difference between computer engineering and computer science? Could someone explain to me in a clear way what makes them different cause I'm going to major in computer engineering but I'm unsure about it and maybe computer science is what I may want instead. Like what main jobs do computer engineering majors perform and what jobs do computer science majors get also.
Answer: Computer Engineering is the building of computers, hardware etc. Computer Science is more designing algorithms, software and programming
Question: How long do people trying for Computer Engineering study for per day? So for Computer Engineering, how long do you work for (including lectures) and studying per day.
10 hours?
Answer: At least a couple of hours per day. More on weekends and when tests are coming up.
Depends on your studying style.
Here's what I used to do when I was studying Computer Engineering:
At the start of the semester, you need to work harder and put in more hours...because you do not know the instructor, how tough their tests will be, and what the tests will cover (homework problems or things from the textbook, or lecture notesetc). On a daily basis, at least go over lecture notes and as many homework problems as you can. On the weekends, do remaining homework problems and read text.
Once you have the first tests, you will have an idea of what to focus on and then you can categorize your time accordingly. Also, when you register for classes, make sure not to sign up for all hard-copre engineering classes...try to keep at least one or two other classes like english, history etc that you need for your degree.
Question: Need help regarding computer science and computer engineering? Hi..
I'm planning to do further studies diploma in computer science. But after I graduated from studying computer science, can I further my studies in computer engineering and software engineering for degree level. And plz explain computer engineering and software engineering differences.
Answer: Yes,after u complete diploma u can pursue computer engineering in degree level. There is not so significant difference between software engineering and computer engineering. There are same courses offered by various institution in the name computer engineering and in the name of software engineering. But if u wanna know the actual difference, then one thing is worth to mention ...computer engineering is the superset of software engineering, in proper sense computer sciencie or computer engineering(though thses two terms has also a bit difference) deals with all the aspects of a computer wether hardware or software and software engineering primarily focuses on software design and software architecture, there are few courses which names these course as IT i.e. Information Technology. But today wether the course offered is software engineering or computer enginnering or IT , the subject matter being taught is more or less same which is software oriented, even in computer science too main importance is given on softwares.
Question: What's a better major for the future, Computer Science or Sometime of engineering for computers? I love computers. I love them so much I'm thinking of studying something computer related in college, not sure what it is yet. I Don't really know the difference between computer science and computer engineering and what not. I really need some help.
Answer: Computer Science (CS) mainly deals with software (basic and advance programming, operating systems, theories of computing, etc.) while Computer Engineering (CE) deals with mainly the hardware components of the computer (circuits, electronic devices, etc.). Computer Engineering is, in many ways, parallel to Electrical Engineering.
Even though CS handles software and CE handles hardware, you'll still learn some basics of circuits in CS and some programming in CE.
Despite the differences, both Computer Science and Engineering depend on each other. Without software, the computer is nothing but an empty shell and without hardware, software cannot exist.
Question: What are the promising areas of Computer Science and Engineering? I like to know the areas which are awaiting research and innovation in computer engineering. The areas which can make a healthy career- providing knowledge, interests ,good placements, money and fame.I am opting for this branch shortly.
Answer: Learn the most fundamental of principles. Learn down deep - do the hard science that others avoid because it seems too hard. Get a minor in Mathematics instead of a minor in marketing. Learn physics, the quantum mechanics of chip. Then, when you present your self it will be that you are prepared for science, can sustain hard work and that you can pay attention. Wouldn't you hire that person for any job in the industry? You know he'll catch onto any challenge
Question: What are some good graduate schools for computer engineering in Virginia? Hi! I'm looking for information about potential VA grad schools that have a good computer engineering program. I know VA Tech is one and that's my preferred choice at the moment, but I wanted to know of others. Thank you for your answers.
Answer: The only good grad school for computer engineering was VA tech. And I believe it's the only well known school for that particular field outside of the state. Klg.
Question: How many years does it usually take to get a degree in Computer Engineering? I'm a first year at a community college and i just figured out that i want to do computer engineering. According to the counselor I have to do 2 more years at the community college to finish all the lower division classes and be able to transfer. So by the time I finish with that it will be 3 years and then would it take another 2 years to finish my degree at the university i transfer to? I heard it takes about 4-5 years average for an engineer degree. Anyone have any info?
Answer: I took full semesters both fall and spring with full summers too and it will take me 4 1/2 years to graduate with a Bachelors Degree in electrical engineering. Most of my friends are finishing up in 5 years. It is rarely done in 4 years and this is why engineering majors tend to get higher starting salaries. I would advise you to get either a mechanical, electrical or biomedical degree because a computer engineer will more likely get outsourced. This means that you really dont need the engineer at the workplace so you can hire someone from literally china to do the same work. Computer engineers to a lot of programming and this is the main reason why.
Starting salary for most engineering degrees are around 60K and this comes from what some of my friends are earning who graduated in may
Question: What can i do with a degree in computer engineering? do i have to go to a prestigious college to get a good degree in computer engineering? Is it a rewarding job? what kind of jobs can i get with that kind of degree? Is it hard to find a job? What is the salary like for a person just starting out working?Does it get boring or is it someting that i would enjoy if i like technology?
Answer: I am currently and student in electrical engineering. Im on my last year in college and I graduate this december so trust in what I say.....
First off, computer engineers are being outsource meaning. Most employers are hiring from other parts of the world rather than hiring in the US. How come? because they are willing to work for less money. So computer engineers are at a stand still. However, if you end up with good grades and go to a nice school you can get a really good job.
Try to get into a college that is at least a tier 2 school.
Computer engineers are one of the highest paid engineering disciplines coming second to Chemical engineers. They usually make about 60K+ right out of school with no experience. Get an internship and you will make a little more. 60K is about 1700 dollars every two weeks after taxes. This means you will bring 1700 dollars every other week. Most college graduates NEVER make that much in their entire life. That is why engineering is so prestigious. However, it is an extremely difficult degree. Being in electrical engineering i am required to take computer engineering classes and let me tell you it is no walk in the park. I have one of the highest gpas at my school with a 3.9GPA and i can tell you i spend a lot of time studying. Most of my engineering friends who have graduated earned about 65K right out of school. So im looking forward to making that much. In the long run it you will ive a comfortable life. Doctors, lawyers, and engineers ARE NOT rich they just live comfortably. They become rich by investing wisely after college. The reason why is because after 4-5 years of college the degree shapes you to think a certain way which is a good way. You are not the same anymore, let me tell you this. I have learned math beyond calculus 3 do you really think anyone in their right mind will think the same after experiencing advance math that way.
Here are the salaries depending on engineering branches
Chemical engineering- about 70K
Computer engineering-60-65K
Electrical engineering- 55-65K (some friends got 80K)
When graduation comes it really depends on your grades and internships on how much your going to get paid. Engineers are in very much in demand so you dont have to worry about not finding a job. The good thing about engineering is that if you cant find an engineering job you can find any other math and physics job because engineering is very flexible. Good luck in deciding what engineering you want to do.
I chose electrical engineering because i wanted to build my own circuits but becareful any engineering degree is very demanding. I have lost countless of friends because they couldnt keep up with the course load. Oh and its usually not a 4 year degree it will take you about 4 1/2 to 5 years to graduate. Trust me on that. I did more than full time and took full summer semesters and it looks like its going to take me 4 1/2 years.
Hope this helps
Question: what is the difference between Computer engineering & Software engineering? I know that Software & Hardware are parts of computer. But, I want to know what studies led you to Computer engineering & Software engineering. Can we come as a Computer engineer doing Computer science?
Answer: My reply is fairly generic, so it should apply fairly universally.
Software Engineering is a specialisation within Computer Engineering.
Computer Engineering encompases both Hardware and Software Engineering.
On the other hand "Computer Science" is not the same as Computer Engineering. A Computer Scientist is not so much interested in software or hardware, but focuses on how the use of computers influences humanity. It includes such topics as Operations Research.
So, in summary, your choices are:
1.Computer Science where you do a bit of programming to help you understand the capabilities of computers, but you don't become a programmer (software engineer).
2.Computer Engineering, where you can specialise as either a Hardware Engineer or a Software Engineer.
Hope this helps!
Question: What type of mathematics do I need to practice and learn for a computer science or computer engineering major? I'm interested in taking computer science or computer engineering but have a horrible background in math. I'm willing to try to get used to it.
Answer: Paul's on. Aside from math, start learning networking (TCP/IP), database (SQL) stuff and a programming language (like C++ or .NET). Lots of fun...
Question: What must I begin studying to major in computer engineering? I would like to major in computer engineering in college, but where do I get started?
Would learning oracle, or C++ help at all?
Answer: It depends on what university you go to, but taking as much math as you can is a good start for any engineering degree. I would defiantly recommend at least getting familiar with a programming language like C++ or Java, something object oriented. If available, it might also help to take get a basic understanding of electronics, ie: ohms law, basic components etc.
Question: what is a great college thats offers a computer engineering major and why? Also....Are Technical schools great for getting computer engineering degrees or do they even offer a degree?? But what type of degree can I get and is a degree at a technical school good enough for getting a top of the line job or a really good paying job?? With a 2.0 GPA where do you think i should go?? (Tech school or College?)
Answer: MIT is probably the best. However, I think most schools that offer this degree and have a focus on all engineering will be still be great. However, if your 2.0 is on a 4.0 scale, it will be hard for you to get into any college, so tech school might be more realistic for you.
