Question: What is the difference between a surveying major and Surveying Engineering Technology? are they both the same? does Surveying Engineering Technology make more money?
Answer: A survey major means you will have your courses focused around being a surveyor and generally you will end up with a degree (BS) in surveying. Surveying Engineering Tech. generally means that the courses are not completely built around a survey profession.
As for money.. how much you make depends upon where you end up in life, but you will not simply graduate and be a surveyor. You should check with your state's licensing agency to find out what the requirements are to be granted a license as a professional surveyor. (its not a slam dunk so you should not only learn what they are but also start that process BEFORE you graduate with any degree).
So .. as a licensed professional , like a doctor or lawyer..etc.. how much can you expect to make?
As a surveyor I sell my time and my knowlege.. not just a skill. That means I can be doing a variey of things from subdividing land with the correct maps, measurements and deeds, to being in court to testify as an expert witness. Fees can range depending upon the nature of that work.
A typical surveyor will charge between $125 to $250 per hour depending upon his locality and the task.
.
Question: How much money is the salary of a survey engineer in united states?
Answer: According to the US Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos040.htm
Median annual earnings of surveyors were $48,290 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $35,720 and $63,990. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $26,690 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $79,910. Median annual earnings of surveyors employed in architectural, engineering, and related services were $47,570 in May 2006.
Question: how can i fin the job in surveying engineering field? i am licensed surveyor i really need to find the job i need money .how can i find the job in surveying engineering field in orange county? ican be a member of field crew to the surveyor. if any body knows it help me. thankk you
Answer: orange county , sounds crowded for me , why dont u widen ur search area , or even go to another state , u know the employment market doesnt usually offer what we expect
Question: what is the general job outlook on surveying engineering? considering majoring in surveying engineering ,what is the general info on job description and does it pay good
Answer: Surveying is generally a technical school career, not an engineering specialty. The closest engineering discipline is civil engineering.
And there will always be need for surveyors. However, that demand is generally tied to the health of the construction industry.
Question: Becoming a Quantity Surveyor / cost engineer in United States when doing Quantity surveying degree in uk?
Answer: Highly possible
But only if you have or will be doing the accredited RICS courses (they will say so in the prospectus). These courses cover the essentials and will enable you to complete the competence test after you have done two-threes of work. After you have RICS status you can apply for jobs on their website which is global.
What a wonderful world!
Question: What is the job market like for civil engineering and land surveying in Australia? I've always dreamed of living in Australia. A friend of mine spent time there and brought back great reviews of everything he did and saw. I'm currently working in the civil engineering and land surveying industry and am wondering how easy it would be to find a job within the same industry in Australia (preferably along the east coast).
Answer: Civil Engineers are in high demand right now in Australia. Land Surveyors, not so much.
My firm had many offices in Australia and we are sending over Civil Engineers to work for them left and right.

Answer: You might want to identify what country you are in. That helps with answering a question as specialized as this.
Question: surveying and engineering plan and profile of road way and sewer line? I am designing a road alignment in class. Now the station chainage is on the centerline of the road. The sewerlines and manholes are on a curve section of road. Do I project the manholes to the centerline and use that station for their position in the profile view? If I do, the actual profile linear distance will be affected. Do I project and measure the true distance on the plan view and label the true distance on the profile view knowing the distance will be off??
Answer: It has been convention on the projects I have built that the stationing is projected vertically down to the profile without rescaling. The actual run lengths are provided on the profile as text and you generally do not scale off the profile except to determine depths. Horizontal scaling is performed on the plan.
For example, in a 40 scale plan an run lengths of 400 feet. The profile shows the manholes at 400 foot spacings by scale. If the sewer is on the inside of the curve or outside of the curve the run lengths would scale too long and too short respectively if you scaled them off the profile.
And yes, the station of the manholes are measured along and perpendicular to the centerline. Show this stationing on the profile.
Question: What can I do with a masters degree in Geospatial Surveying Engineering? I plan on going to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi for a M.S. in Geospatial Surveying Engineering...I am currently persuing my GIS cert. Are there any opportunities down in Texas that could use someone with a GIS (Geospatial Surveying Engineering) degree/cert.? What kind of industry can I go into? Mind you, I only have a B.A. in History currently...thank you in advance!
Answer: Make maps
Question: Why does a design engineer need to know the location of the lowest point on a vertical curve? its a simple question asked from a fellow friend in my engineering surveying class. but turns out I'm so into surveying calculations ONLY i don't know a simple question (theories) like this!
Answer: I assume you mean the lowest vertical point on a curve, sometimes called the minimum point of inflection, or greatest lower bound. There are many possible reasons for needing that point, but the most common is that it establishes one side of a range of values, or bandwidth. e.g., it may be the starting point of a band-pass filter. hth.
Question: How will the future of engineering and surveying change with the advancement of GPS?
Answer: GPS is just now hitting the mainstream america so many people are now aware of its advantages, but GPS has been known to and used by surveyors since the early 80's. The changes have been very large for some surveyors and very small if non existant for others.
The small shop surveying company may not use GPS or need to use GPS to carry out their daily surveying routines. It doesn't really benefit a surveyor whom is surveying a small lot in a subdivision. The large companies have to use GPS to be competative on larger projects. GPS allows the surveyor to cover larger areas in a shorter amount of time maintaining the same high accuracy standards that the industry requires. It has revolutionized the surveyors control on a nation wide scale but as I mentioned this began over 20 years ago for us.
Question: What profession is highly paid between Quantity Surveying and Civil Engineering ? Genarally Civil Engineers can do Project Management, Structural Designing and Construction Financial Management etc... But in the paying department they have different salary scales.
What is the best feild for a MSc or higher studies.
Answer: Its depend on the market demand on each field and the country you live. Both professions pay vary in other country with high demand

Question: how can i findi land surveying engineering job in orange county? i am survey engineer.i earned my bachelor's degree in 2003 and i have 4 years experience in this field in my back country.ijust moved to orange county and looking for job in this field.i passed the caltrans exam and city of long beach exam in surveying also but they didnt call me yet.and also i took the L.S.I.T. exam and waiting for the result.i am looking for any surveying comany to bieng hired wit them.is there any budy who can tell me how and where can i find the surveying company or any surveying job.i really appreciate.
Answer: A couple of suggestions
1) Contact the CLSA (California Land Surveyors Association) in Santa Rosa.. they often have a list of entry openings. Join the local Orange county chapter and go to a few dinner meetings. Meet people and find out who has a job before the job is even anounced. Surveyors are ALWAYS happy to meet students/LSIT's)
2) Check the COunty and City offices as well as the other local municipal agencies (like water and gas).. these agencies usually field survey crews and often have openings.
3) CalTrans ALWAYS has openings...
4) Craigslist actually had two opening listed (under engineering) about a week ago
5) Get out the phone book and look under Land Surveyors and start calling. Its a small network (as you must know by now there are only about 3,000 active surveyors in the state so everyone knows everyone else in the local area).. asking one person can lead you to the next.
6) Don't limit yourself to survey firms (for now) construction firms will hire 'future' surveyors to do the grade setting and layout work that does not require a license.
One of these WILL get you a job.
good luck in your career.

Answer: "Willis's Elements of Quantity Surveying" by Andrew Willis, William Trench
"Willis's Practice and Procedure for the Quantity Surveyor" by Allan Ashworth, Keith Hogg
"Contract Management In Civil Works Projects" by Prakash Va
Question: significance of longitude and latitude in engineering surveying?
Answer: The longitude and latitude give you the exact location you are on the map, without this information it is impossible to pinpoint property lines on the ground knowing the latitude and longitude gives you the exact location of a place or point on earth. it also allows you to Aline the building so that the sun does not enter the windows of the building. It also allows for mapping of the earth by satellites here is a web site that explains it best.
http://www.slac.stanford.edu/pubs/slacpubs/3500/slac-pub-3620.pdf
Question: In the context of engineering surveying what are "redundant observations" and why are they made?
Answer: Redundant observations are extra observations beyond what is needed to mathematically calculate all the lengths and directions. They are used to detect blunders and to allow adjustment of the survey, perhaps using the method of least squares.
Question: i need to know in detail how it is used in each of the fields such as navigation, land surveying, engineering? i need atleast a paragraph for application of trigonometry in each field
Answer: The answer to your question will best be found in a library, rather than on the internet. Your question is a rather obvious attempt to get somebody else to do your homework. Asking for help with homework is one thing. Submitting another's work as your own is a different matter. It is suggested that you drop the course if you can't cut the mustard.
Question: i'm a first year student of quantity surveying. is quantity survey different from cost engineering? Are there online sites where i can learn major construction estimates and processes for both building and civil engineering works?
Answer: Quantity surveying is not different from cost engineering.I would also refer to it as cost engineering.
Question: Do engineering/survey firms in Canada work in the metric system? I have never before considered applying for a job in Canada however I love Victoria and Vancouver and am interested in relocating. However I have a question.
Do engineering/survey firms in Canada work in the metric system of measurement ?
Thank you for the response.
Answer: Yes they have been metric since the 1970s
Question: Traffic Court Question & Engineer Surveys? For those of you who have been to traffic court in Maricopa County, I have some questions:
Are police officers in Phoenix required to appear?
Is this a one on one hearing or group hearing?
If you have a good record to date, is there any circumstance under which the court may consider withholding points and proffering the fine only?
Any other suggestions (other than traffic school)?
Also, it has always been my understanding that the entire US works under the 85% rule, speed limits reflect an engineering survey of what the common 85% drive on the roads. This would seem not to apply to Phoenix and its 35 mph on big streets like 7th Avenue. Does anyone know where to get copies of the most recent Engineering & Traffic Investigations?
Thanks for the input!
Answer: Yes the officer is required to appear, if you go and he is a no show you can usually get the ticket dismissed.
Usually a group hearing
Sometimes a good record can be taken into consideration, depending on how you plead your case and your ability to make your argument
You can also try having it reduced to "misuse of finite resources".... my fiance did this and the judge accepted it....the fine is way less and I believe there are no points
Goodluck
Question: What is dimentional control in land survey engineering? What is dimentional control in land survey engineering? what the use of it..? In what condition we use it.?
Answer: Its a survey process to get ground terrain perfectly.. It is used in topographycal survey.
Question: Site Engineers/Surveying Calculator? Can anyone point me in the direction of some free software for windows which acts as a site engineers/surveying calculator. The sort of thing i am looking for is the programs listed on ebay item 200290196290. enabling me to do bearing/distance/coordinate calculations easily, and also convert to local grids from national.
Thanks.
Answer: I am a civil engineer. The Corpscon program from the US Army Corps of Engineers will perform geographic coordinate conversion computations. It can be downloaded from the link below.
COGO was a software program I used before using integrated survey and design software such as InRoads from Bentley Systems. While I don't have experience with it, Copan is a freeware version of COGO, which may be found at http://www.underhill.ca/Software/ugl_software.php.
Question: Is anybody here Survey Engineer from Australia Sydney? I'm looking for job...
Answer: no, I study Industrial engineering in "Univeridad Catolica", from managua, nicaragua at the other side of the world
Question: challenges and futures of engineering &construction surveying discuss your answer based on the statement ?
Answer: a) Do your own essays.
b) At least try and complete the question...
Question: Traffic Court & Fines - Arizona & Engineer Surveys? I was under the impressions (delusion?) that the entire US works under the 85% rule, speed limits reflect an engineering survey of what the common 85% drive on the specific roadway to encourage abidance with what the majority consider safe and prudent. This would seem not to apply to Phoenix and its 35 mph on big aertial streets. Does anyone know where to get copies of the most recent Engineering & Traffic Investigations to determine if these match the recommendations?
For anyone familiar with traffic laws/court in Maricopa County, I have some questions:
Are police officers in Phoenix required to appear?
Is this a one on one hearing or group hearing?
If you have a good record to date, is there any circumstance under which the court may consider withholding points and proffering the fine only?
Any other suggestions (other than traffic school), ticket involving handheld radar?
Thanks for the input!
I'm not really looking at the surveys for court necessarily. I'm curious to see them because 35 definitely does not match what I see everyone drive, in fact in AZ driving 35 will get you purposely run off the road by another angry driver, so definitely not prudent. Mostly just curious to see what the engineers have to say, might be worth bringing before the city council for review.
Answer: A speed limit is the same standard for everyone on a particular road. You cannot refute a speed limit. It is the same for everyone and therefore set in stone. It seems to me that you were the unfortunate one who was caught on this particular road.
Police officers are required to appear in traffic court; however, sometimes they do not show because of other obligations. Now, if an officer does not show, the case can still transpire because the court date can be rescheduled if the officer has a good reason for missing the hearing.
An additional suggestion is to be polite and kind to the judge.
He may have compassion on you and reduce the punishment, especially if you have a clean record prior to the violation. It all depends on the judge. If you are found guilty, ask the judge about traffic school.
Best of luck!
Question: Study option between Msc Civil Engineerin or Msc Quantity Surveying? I have done my graduation in Civil Engineering from India. Now i am residing in United Kingdom. I am planning to study further in Construction Field. i would like to know which is the best option between Msc Civil engineering and Msc Quantity surveying. what are the job prospects for both,
Answer: Both are good options in terms of job prospects,as it stands that engineers are needed in UK.Civil engineers have the option to choose between fields, and QS is a field of civil engineering. Therefore studying Msc Civil eng is recommended from their you can choose which ever field you prefer to go to.

Question: What are some majors I can do if im not very good in math? I wanted to go into an engineering field like surveying engineering but Im kind of doubting it since im not so good in math
i took the asvab at school which they didnt let us finish but that didn't tell me jack.
Answer: Many colleges offer a degree in Engineering Technology. This degree path is more "Hands on" practical and less math//theory. It can be offered as a 2- or 4-year program depending on the school and the training. The fields are quite diverse from electronics to mechanical/ structural to plastics/ceramics.
I have hired several outstanding engineers from these programs. They perform well especially in a plant field environment supporting construction or production operations.
I would recommend looking at these programs in colleges in your area. You should also think about the area of engineering that interests you; not that you cannot change our mind but because you should study what iterests and motivates you if you expect to continue for a lifetimw career.
Question: I'M a survey engineer.I want 2 know about'finding azimuth with gyroscopes'.tanx!? It is one portion of my research. My research is abouth 'all methods for findinding azimuth' . I mean astronomical method and use gyroscopes. At end i must describe the way thath we can calibrate the gyroscopes.realy this research is very important 4 me.tanx alot
Answer: Do you mean a north seeking theodolite? This has a rate gyro sensitive enough to measure the earth's rotation. When this reads zero, the axis of the gyro must be aligned with the axis of rotation of the earth, so you have the azimuth of true North.
You can also find true north from the pole star (which is not quite true north, but you can compensate for the error by knowing the time of day and some other stuff). This can be used to calibrate your gyro.
Question: Pregnant Civil Engineer - what happens to me at work? I'm a setting out engineer for a large civil engineering contractor - i work on a building site for 10 hours a day 6 days a week. I love my job - don't know what is going to happen now i'm pregnant - my work is not exactly office based - i put pegs in the ground for a living and do land surveys - do you think i'll loose my job?
Answer: According to international labour laws and rights of employees act you have the right of 60 dayd leaves and in later periods of your pregnancy company will be responsible to accomodate you in some other job.
Question: My sister graduated in diploma civil engineering. Can she further study in bachelor of quantity surveying, utm?
Answer: You can check entry requirements for bachelor in quantity surveying.
Question: survey;if you receive a phone from someone saying they are a company engineer.telling you to press #90 or #09? hang up straight away.they are accessing your SIM,and making phone calls at your expense.has this happened to anyone lately.beware.
Answer: Wow thank you very much, hasn't happened to me as yet but I'll be wary of this happening in future.
Question: How many postings to expect? If I was to join at 16, not being able to go on ops until 18, could you expect to be posted to afghanistan when your 18?
Also how many postings to expect on a four year period?
Thanks, if this helps I want to go in the Royal Engineers as military engineer design, preferably surveying engineer.
Answer: Afghanistan is 6 month tour not a posting and it would depend on whether the unit you were with was due to go, it could be that you were posted to a unit that had just got back, which means you may not go on tour for another 18 months to 2 years. or if they were already on tour you would most probably stay on rear party. Your first posting as a Sapper if you joined the Corp of Royal Engineers is normally between 3 - 5 years.
Question: How much should we disclose in the selling of our house? We have potential buyer of our home that has been on the market for approx. three weeks. The buyer has concerns regarding cracks in the walls and subsequently hired an engineer look at the house. In our Sellers Disclosure document we mentioned that the previous owner had foundation work done we but did mention that we a structural engineer survey the property plus the fact that we looked at a couple of bids. Should we look at having another estimate done for foundation so that it does not look like we withheld information?
Answer: If you had a structural survey done, it revealed additional problems, you took bids and did not disclose this, you have a problem.
An estimate doesn't get you anything regarding disclosure.
Question: civil engineering... surveying question,...? i need huge amount of data regarding advanced surveying techniques, tools, methods etc.. can anyone help me out... i need things such as GPS and such stuff...
Answer: Happy to answer ur question ,
but sorry gotta tell u that the best way for that is to search it , u'll find some cooler results than u expect.
About the techniques used :
Total station is the father of the industry now , some equipped with GPS.
GPS isnt the only alternate , some advanced applications mix it with the other existing systems , Glonass & galileo , though galileo isnt yet completed , but if its done it'll swap the GPS.
gps gives u +- 5 m , for Galileo its +/- 1 m only.
Before GPS was that commercial & actually till now when u wanna have surveying data for any mega project ( i mean mega regarding area not cost) .
Its always about photogrammetry ( aerial photos by metric cameras mounted on airvehicle).
Also there is the LIDAR , which is part of photogrammetric scope.
Also HSRI (hi resloutio sat. imaging) is widely used for remote sensing nowadays , though its not surveying but u can consider it rough surveying it gives u basic & inital data , specially when working with the non-visual light spectra.
Finally whats promising in the field , yet very very expensive , its the HDS (hi definition surveying) the major tool for this is the 3D scanners , its a piece that does everything , like T.S total station , but its left to work for hours / single setting up . it gives u the reading for all the points around u . w/o any person standing with a pole/reflector. This is the state of the art Tech. , but as i said its quite very expensive so far.
between this & that , there are much more applications for everything in surveying , also for GPS , u better check for its uses , becaues its the fad of this decade , u know from radar detecting to tracking Prisoners , ending with missile guidance & avionics , which is its Basic Usage & what the amercian army made it for.
hope this helps , for further details , (if u like my answer or surveying that much ) , just post it.......
Question: I am a Civil Engineer and wish to form a firm, dealing with topographical survey? i shall be dealing with topographical survey
Answer: Where r u?
Do u have or wanna buy/lease GPS, Total station, robot ?
Are u also a RPLS , because u may need to sign your surveys?

Question: Master Degree of which universities accept in USA? Hi,
I Iranian and have bachelor degree in Surveying Engineering in Iran.
I plan to continue for master degree in Malaysia and then go to USA for Phd.
Now I want to know wich universities accept from USA universities?
Answer: Generally, U.S. universities will accept degrees from the more-respected universities in each country. I'm not really familiar with Malaysian universities as a whole, but if you go to a good university there and do well, you stand a chance of getting into a Ph.D. program in the U.S.
Question: What is the importance of Geomatics in Mechanical Engineering? What is the use of Engineering Survey in Mechanical Engineering?
Answer: I've been a mechanical engineer for 8 years. I design airplanes. I've never heard of Geomatics.
According to the other guy, I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I have to ask you a favor - please don't tell my boss.
Question: Where is a college with a surveying program, or something related, near Charleston, SC? I'm looking for a 4-year college, or maybe a 2-year. I have some transferrable credits I think. I tried civil engineering, but I just couldn't do it. Columbia's not too far away, just something near Charleston.
Answer: You want to Find an ABET accredited school that offers Surveying or Geomatics. (Different words but same programs) From the Abet website the following schools are available in the SouthEast. Unfortunatly surveying programs can be few and far between there are only 25 accredited programs in the country.
Here are the schools ABET shows for the Southeast, along with the type of degree offered BS for Bachelors and AS for associates, and the year the school became acredited.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
East Tennessee State University

In my personal opinion surveying/geomatics is a much more rewarding career path than civil engineering but I have friends who like to argue that point.
One other option that I know of is
Metropolitan State College of Denver
Denver, CO
Surveying and Mapping (BS) [2004]
They offer a Distance education program, so it may be something that you want to look into.
If you have other surveying related questions a great resource is www.rpls.com. This website is a forum of Surveyors accross the country.
Good luck with your search and furthering your education.
