Question: This question is about how much it would cost to build a block of flats? It is in the details box.? could please tell me a ball park figure of how much two and half (accommodation in the roof in second floor) storey apartment block? Also if it had one storey flat roof extension attached at the rear. Furthermore a demolition of existing 3 beds/ bungalow would be required. It would be helpful if included all fees e.g. surveyor and architect. Here is a description of the lay out. On ground floor: a 1 bed flat of living internal floor area of 61.7 m2 with an ensuite and a bathroom. A 3 bed 88.6 m2 with ensuite and bathroom. On first floor: two, 2 bed flats both have living internal floor area of 58.9m2 and both one bathroom each. On second floor (loft) a one bed flat of 55.2m2, which has one bathroom. All would be finished to a good standard and marketed around £200,000 in south east London. How long would this roughly take to do this after planning permission granted?
I know this might not be the best place to ask this question.
Answer: I really dont think that Yahoo answers is the place to find out answers to complex questions...........................
This could only be answered by architects and experienced builders with a copy of the plans in front of them.
Question: Can I make money from my simple but original architectural design idea even though I'm not an architect? I'm not an architect but the other day I came up with a simple but (as far as I know) original idea for how apartment blocks could be drastically improved in a way that would yield improvements for the environment and for residents' quality of life. I have the skills to create a 3D rendering of the design, but not the skill or time to do this in the way I assume an architect would, i.e. with detailed information on materials/internal architecture/reaction to extreme weather conditions/cooling mechanism etc etc.
Nevertheless I honestly believe my design is worthwhile, so I have two questions:
1) Is there any way I can make money from the idea, even though I'm not an architect?
2) If not, I'd like to see the idea implemented anyway, or at least know why it wouldn't be viable. What should I do?
Answer: See from what you have stated you have something really valuable and would yield good results and money. What you have to do is first of prepare a complete report of the same with illustrations as best as you could draw. This you keep in a sealed cover. Next find out architects near where you live and write a letter to them just like one you have post here (not the money but that you have a design) and say you would like an appointment with them. There you go along with one lawyer friend of yours with the sealed cover and proceed with discussions and later every other thing would naturally follow. Note : Do not reveal the complete details even to your lawyer also but keep them safe in the sealed cover and tell him that the whole project is inside this cover and it is his duty to safeguard the same while presenting it to the architect. Hope this satisfies you. All the best.
Question: What is max(N) so that NxNxN Rubik's Cube is physically possible? There is the classic 3x3x3 cube. (Also 2x2x2) and 4x4x4, and the "Professor's Cube" a 5x5x5. Is it possible to build a 6x6x6 cube? Or even higher?
In terms of internal architecture the classic Rubik's Cube is pretty darn complicated already. I'm surprised 4 and 5 are even possible... But Mr. Rubik was an architect and a great puzzler! So I suppose he had some brains! :)
Answer: 6x6x6 is physically impossible due to the size of the individual cubes relative to the necessary size of the hub: basically in order for the corner cubes to be held in place, the radius of the hub for a 6x6x6 would be larger than the cube itself, and therefore cannot exist.
- it's not easy to explain but trust me that 5x5x5 is the maximum
there's no limit on a computer of course, and there's a video somewhere of somebody solving a 11x11x11 on a program in about 15 hours.
Interesting aside, has anybody tried modelling a rubik's cube on any standard engineering software that utilises "mating" of objects (such as SolidWorks)? It can't be done! The sign that the rubik's cube is a real masterpiece of design.
@the robster, 5x5x5 is easier by most methods than 4x4x4, due to the fact that 4x4x4 has no facially central square, and therefore no reference point.
Question: My 60's house needs a facelift to the exterior??? CAN YOU GET AN ARCHITECT TO RE-DESIGN EXTERIOR OF HOUSE TO GIVE FACELIFT WITHOUT MAJOR INTERNAL ALTERATIONS
Answer: Yes, an architect can help you with that.
You might not need an architect though. There is alot that you can do yourself to change the outside of your house relatively cheaply
1) The walls: Repaint, have wooden siding put on or a brick or stone facing. Have any plaster or stucco re-done with new trim
2) Guttering and eves: Repaint and replace with new colours & up to date materials add decorative touches
3) Windows: Houses of this era often don't have good window frames. A decent joiner should be able to build decorative frames around the windows and I always think that shutters really help the appearence of a house. If you have frames; re paint them a different colour
4) Roof: depending on the material new roof tiles can come times be put on over the old ones without too much difficulty.
5) Front door: A new door with an up todate look, or a different colour. Some people frame their doors with columns, plants or an archway.
I hope that some of these suggestions are useful to you.
Question: What, how could Islam?? 9 The pointed arch so characteristic of Europe's Gothic cathedrals was an invention borrowed from Islamic architecture. It was much stronger than the rounded arch used by the Romans and Normans, thus allowing the building of bigger, higher, more complex and grander buildings. Other borrowings from Muslim genius included ribbed vaulting, rose windows and dome-building techniques. Europe's castles were also adapted to copy the Islamic world's - with arrow slits, battlements, a barbican and parapets. Square towers and keeps gave way to more easily defended round ones. Henry V's castle architect was a Muslim.
10 Many modern surgical instruments are of exactly the same design as those devised in the 10th century by a Muslim surgeon called al-Zahrawi. His scalpels, bone saws, forceps, fine scissors for eye surgery and many of the 200 instruments he devised are recognisable to a modern surgeon. It was he who discovered that catgut used for internal stitches dissolves away naturally (a disc
(a discovery he made when his monkey ate his lute strings) and that it can be also used to make medicine capsules. In the 13th century, another Muslim medic named Ibn Nafis described the circulation of the blood, 300 years before William Harvey discovered it. Muslims doctors also invented anaesthetics of opium and alcohol mixes and developed hollow needles to suck cataracts from eyes in a technique still used today.
Any haters will be reported
Answer: Nice, I give you a star. There is some discussion however about the pointed arch. It might be a case of cross-fertilisation.
Why you report haters? Talk to them, show them you have arguments. We do not need the Yahoo police if we are sure our ideas are better and stronger that their simpleton's ravings.
Have a nice day.
Question: Washinton, we have a problem. NYT editorial 12-24-05 entitled "Alito's Zeal for Presidential Power",invites a question in my mind, especially after reading Sunday's Boston Globe article: "Cheney's office searches all bills for limits on presidential power".
I quote, "The officials said Mr. Cheney's legal advisor and chief of staff, David Addington, is the Bush administration's leading architect of the 'signing statements' the president has appended to more than 750 laws. The statements assert the president's right to ignore the laws because THEY CONFLICT WITH HIS INTERPRETATION OF THE CONSTITUTION". (caps are all mine)
Further, the article reads, "Using signed statements, THE ADMINISTRATION HAS CHALLENGED MORE LAWS THAN ALL PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS COMBINED." (caps mine)
Concluding, the article states, "A spokeswoman...asked to comment on Mr. Addington's role in reviewing legislation, said, 'We do not comment on internal deliberations.' Mr. Addington, through the spokeswoman, declined to be interviewed."
Not meaning to be over-dramatic in this matter, but it does worry me--and you?
Answer: It all damn well worries me. I honestly believe if this President could he would declare martial law. He believes that he is omnipotent and infallible. Look very closely how the military in encroaching into civilian authority-the CIA and securing the southern border.
Question: My Question!!!!!!!!!!!!? Alec Stanley

1.What are the four parts of a system?
Inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback.
2.Give three examples of natural structures.
A spider’s web, a bird’s nest, and a wasp nest.
3.Explain the difference between a static load and a dynamic load.
A static load changes slowly or not at all where as a dynamic load moves or changes.
4.Describe the loads and forces that act on structures.
The types of forces that act upon a structure are external and internal forces. External forces are forces that one body exerts on another. An internal force is a force that one part of the body exerts on an adjacent or adjoining part of the same body. The types of loads that act upon a structure are static and dynamic loads. Static loads are loads that don’t move very often or not at all. A dynamic load is one that moves a lot.
5.What internal force would be presented in a twisted beam?
Torsion.
6.What major force must the foundation of a home withstand?
Natural disasters.
7.How are beams and columns used in a structure?
They are used to keep the building standing.
8.What information does an architect need before designing a home?
Who will live in the house?
How big should the house be?
How big will the lot be?
Will the building site be level?
Which rooms will be used the most?
How many bedrooms will be needed?
When must the house be complete?
How much money can be sent?
9.Explain the difference between the foundation and the superstructure.
The foundation is in contact with the ground and the superstructure is above the ground.
10.Identify the main parts in the system used to build a house.
Answer: It looks like you still need the answer to #10.
Question: HISTORIANS!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!! WWII, Hitler, and Albert Speer!? Hello!!! For my IB (International Baccalaureate) Modern History class I have an Internal Assessment due. It is an essay assessing any event in history of one's interest. For my topic question I wrote: "How did the Hitler regime induce improvements in military supplies and overall industrial advancement during WWII?" This question, I think, may need some tailoring but I would like some suggestions.
My teacher suggested--for more of an in depth scope into this topic--changing it to how did Albert Speer induce improvements in military supplies and overall industrial advancement during WWII, given that he was Hitler's architect with access to important information into Hitler's mentality and work ethics.
PLEASE...does anyone have any suggestions for what might be helpful? What sources (i.e. books, educational websites, etc.) may render any useful information for this research topic? At the moment, the bibliography is due very soon! So this is URGENT!
I was considering "Inside the Third Reich," by Albert Speer; and "Spandau: The Secret Diaries," by Albert Speer. Feel free to list any helpful suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your help:)
Answer: Yes, Speer's 'Inside the Third Reich' should be your main source.
There's also a couple of good documentaries on DVD:
"Albert Speer - the Nazi Who Said Sorry' a BBC TV doc
and
'Architect of Doom' which examines Hitler's background and interest in architecture, goes into detail about his relationship with Speer, and sets it against the background of the German War effort.
One of the episodes of 'The World at War' TV series includes an interview where Speer's innovations as Minister of Armaments are discussed.
As for Hitler, the work by Joachim Fest is outdated and was never the standard work anyway, this being 'A Study in Tyranny' by Bullock, until supplanted by the excellent 2 volume biography by Ian Kershaw.
However, as Fest served as Speer's editorial aid on 'Inside The Third Reich' Fest's book 'Speer: The Final Verdict' is a must, as is 'Albert Speer: His Battle With Truth' by Gita Sereny.
Question: Philosophically speaking are we the creator of our thoughts or are we the minions of our thoughts? I have noticed that people who succumb to suicide often feel like they are out of options. Although we all have the ability to make choices, none of us chose the time period, geography, social climate or our heritage, gender, or race. These were all things that we simply had to accept and deal with upon birth.
When I was a teenager, I used to believe that our lives were like a blank canvas and we could paint our world into whatever we chose. As an adult I know that individual success is proportional to one’s ability to conform and where conformity is not possible at the very least to adapt. But, when the world around you is out of phase with the world within you then you exist in a constant state of compromise forced to either rationalize the external world or the internal one.
Can a computer reject its programming? Can a character in a book ask the author to rewrite her? Are we the architect of our thoughts or are we just minions of thoughts and emotions given to us by a world we did not create?
Put on your armor, mount your steed, and let the intellectual jousting begin.
Answer: I, for one, am not the creator. I am the shell of my thoughts, but my thoughts are "me" collectively.
Do you understand?
You can have no authority over what you can and cannot think. Your thoughts are the soul representative of yourself.
What you appear to be asking is: Are you in control of your thoughts or are your thoughts in control of you?
If you have a thought worth thinking, it should control or motivate you to do or do things certain ways. So, in a sense, anyone with thoughts worth having are a "minion" of them.
That was a great question. Thanks
Question: HISTORIANS!!! I need ur help once again!! Anyone know anything about Albert Speer? Germany?Military production? I changed my IB History Internal Assessment topic to: "How did Albert Speer improve military production for the Germans during WWII?" I have to turn in an outline for the paper. The thing is I would like to actually find reliable sources, so that my bibliography can be reliable. As for the outline, I don't know that much about Albert Speer and his contribution to Germany yet (although he was Hitler's architect).
Pleas provide me with reliable sources for research on this topic. And if you have any suggestions as to how i should approach the outline/structue of the paper I am open to them. Thank you very much! :D I would greatly appreciat it!
Answer: I would really suggest that you go to a university library or a main city library to get your information seeing that so much is false on line.

This should help you get started, just to point out that Fritz Todt was the armaments minister before Albert Speer, Speer took over in 1942. There was under 3 and a half years left in the war.
As Hitler's Minister of Armaments and War Production, Speer was able to increase war production massive and devastating Allied bombing.
Question: My Contractor failed to obtain building permits to remodel my home now the work is going bad where do I stand? Help, I had a contractor recently remodel my basement as well as other ares of my home, now the sewer they changed is backing up almost every couple of months, the plastering they did is cracking along with with other major and minor problems. About 3/4 of the way of the remodeling being completed a complaint to the buildings department by a terminated employee resulted in me finding out the contractor never obtained proper permits or consulted an architect to conduct the demolition for my home improvement. This contractor plays dumb when I tell him the plumbing they did is bad. They are avoiding the issue at hand by side stepping. The weird part of this ordeal is that the Sewer and Drain company they use to unclog my sewer also agreed this contractor made bad connections or their term a bad cross connection causing this sewer to frequently back up to the point the toilets over flow causing internal damage to the newly installed sheetrock that now has buckled. In an attempt to cover up their error the contractor stated he fired the salesman who set up the contract and who never got the proper building permits. I questioned the owner stating don't you review your newly obtained contracts before starting a new job making sure the proper documents are in order of course the abba dabba talk kicked in. What would happen if I reported this and to who should I report them to now that i'm having these reoccurring problems caused by this contractor. My home is my castle and I spent a lot of money and i'm tired of all of this grief. They come and fix some of the errors but states the house is setteling thats why there are cracks in the plastering and corking that was done due to a railroad that runs past my home. I say this is just shoddy work done for under a years time in my opinion. My contract is still under warranty with them what can I do. If someone can guide me in the right direction to get this matter resolved I would be grateful. Thank you all in advance.
Answer: OK, as a retired builder, I may be able to help you out with this somewhat. First of all, you need to call the building dept and get an inspector over there right away. You will need your canceled checks to show him that you have paid and too whom. Also, hopefully you have a contract in writing with the contractors lic. number and address on it. Next , I would go to the State Contractors Board and/or Licensing board, and file a complaint there. They can put a lein on his bond which is like an insurance co. for contractors. Then i would call my lawyer and show him where you are at that point. Keep all findings in writing to also show the lawyer and contractors board. Take pictures of everything, no matter how small and put them on disc for back up and print out everything. Wall mart does this fairly cheap for you. Then after all of that, the contractor should be getting notified from everybody about his opps. Don't let him give you a ration of s..t about not knowing his salesman didn't tell him or get the permits. It is the contractors responsibility to do so. A salesman , sells, and a contractor builds. You don't need a permit to sell , only to build. Good Luck Rock
Question: New House - Damp Problems? I bought a new house in Feb 2007, after 1 year it become obvious that we had problems with damp around the internal front door frame and front kitchen window. Whenever we have heavy rain the paint work around both the front door and window frame gets very wet and bubbles up. After one year of pain with the builder he eventually sent someone who fitted these plastic outlets into the bricks on the outside wall around the front door and kitchen window. The problem looked to be resolved however after another bout of very heavy rain the damp was back, the paint was all bubbled and again the walls very wet both inside and outside, this was some 12 months after these plastic outlets were fitted. I reported the problem to NHBC after 1 year and 9 months of being in the property and they are in touch with the builder. Today the builder sent out an independent Architect (one of his mates I'm sure) and he told me that the damp could take up to 2 years to go after the problem was resolved, the resolution being these little plastic outlets fitted into the bricks. Personally I feel like I am again being fobbed off, the builder is a bully and not a pleasure to deal with however I'm unsure of my rights and I don't know what to do next, any suggestions please ?
Answer: Unless you are willing to pay for an in dependant expert surveyor to challenge their findings I am afraid you just have to go with the NHBC recommendation but do not let them off the hook. They say upto 2 years so hold them to that then claim on them again if there has been no improvement. However, if you want to challenge their findings then seek advice from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors about employing a specialist surveyor to take them to task. It sounds to me like it may be a building fault, which they are endeavouring to solve cheaply by venting the cavity but if water is still finding its way in to dampen the wall it will never go away that area will always get damp.

Question: How much should the following professions' incomes be? Below are a few professions. For each profession, name the income you think he/she deserves to earn in one year:
1. Elementary school teacher
2. Middle school teacher
3. High school teacher
4. High school teacher with a Ph.D
5. University professor
6. Engineer
7. Architect
8. Lawyer
9. Small business CEO
10. Medium-sized business CEO
11. Large corporation CEO
12. Pediatrician
13. General Physician
14. Internal Medicine/Diagnostics
15. General Surgeon
16. High-end Surgeon (e.g. Cardiology, Neurology)
Here are a few things to consider before answering this question. Teachers (without Ph.Ds) generally have to go through at least a year or two before they get their licenses. With business owners, they have to start the company, which is an extremely tedious task which often takes many years to accomplish, and they are responsible for creating jobs. Doctors have to go through four years of medical school and on average at least another six years of residency and fellowship before they are authorized as doctors. Lawyers have to go through extensive training and various examinations before they can proceed. Engineers usually attend engineering schools for their undergraduate years, which is without doubt the most stressful type of colleges. Please consider these things. Thank you.
Answer: From an economic perspective, they all have the same answer: Each should be given a salary that is determined by their productivity. On their own, none of them DESERVE to earn anything in one year. As a cost of production, earnings should be a reflection of the value the individual brings to a particular job. The jobs also have local differences in that a teacher in one part of the country would not necessarily be able to negotiate a salary equal to what a teacher receives in another part of the country.
Question: Looking for a good education.? I am college student in Florida taking classes at a local state school. My problem is i am taking a psychology course and my professor has no idea what he is taking about. Now let me give you some examples to put into perspective what i am talking about.
1. He told the class how important consciousness is and to illustrate this he showed the class the film "What the bleep do we know".
2. In a class period discussing human evolution and the brains development over time. The class learned that early humans could not distinguish between thoughts going on in their head and the voice of another person. The example he gave to prove this was the pyramids, that when the Egyptians where constructing the pyramids the pharaohs architects would tell a worker what do and the worker could not tell if this was an internal or external command so he would complete the task. (This gem took 30 minutes to explain)
In class we are also constantly told about meditation, becoming in tune with the high power which is the universe, and that 90% of diseases are brought on by stress.
Is there any way i can get my money back and actually learn something about introductory psychology. This class is becoming an intellectual lobotomy.
Ps: In other courses i have learned that the Romans conquered the Greeks at the battle of troy, after the Vietnam war the country was separated into north and south one democratic the other communist, and the 12th century occurred in the 1300s.
Answer: Your professor is an idiot. I seriously suggest bringing these points to the head of the department and complaining. Then to the dean if they don't do anything.
Question: Is Mccain a Hero ? This language of war heroism is used unfairly to confuse unjust wars and their architects with the honor of brave soldiers. By promoting the idea that Vietnam was an honorable war and denigrating antiwar Democrats as too weak to "stay the course," Richard Nixon won the election in 1968. He then kept the war going for another five futile years, sustained by that myth.
Playing the war hero card has long been a political strategy to elect Republicans; legitimize imperial wars; and portray Democrats and peace activists as weak, cowardly, or traitorous. John Kerry, also a courageous soldier, was swift-boated as a traitor because he became a peace activist in Vietnam.
Republicans even did the same to Daniel Ellsberg, a real hero of the Vietnam era. Ellsberg was a war planner who turned against the war and in 1971, at great personal risk, released to The New York Times the "Pentagon Papers," the military's internal and damning history of the war. But as there are no peace heroes, only war heroes in the American moral discourse, President Nixon tried to indict him and many still brand him as a traitor.
Ten out of 11 presidents after the Civil War were Republicans, the majority of whom were generals who ran as war heroes. In the 20th century, Republicans continued to serve up war-hero candidates like Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, George H.W. Bush, a strategy that has worked for tens of decades. And now we have John McCain.
Please white Knight dont give me that true American BS cause the only true Americans in this country is the native Americans
A Hero is a person that saves lives not take THEM
Answer: It's obvious to me the Daniel Ellsberg was a real hero, as you say. He took big personal risks for the good of his country.
I have trouble using the term "hero" to describe somebody who fought, however bravely, in an immoral war. (One would then be obliged to call our enemies heroes as well.) Yet I do believe their desire to do what they perceived to be right should be honored in some way.
In McCain's case, the story is that he refused the Viet Cong's offer of early release. I'm not clear whether this actually hastened the release of others. If it did, I suppose that would qualify as heroic.
